Amanda Nunes (15-4-0) earned a narrow split-decision victory over Valentina Shevchenko (14-3-0) to successfully defend her UFC women’s bantamweight crown at UFC 215 in Edmonton Saturday evening.

Nunes seemed to control the octagon from the start, trying to pressure Shevchenko, using leg kicks and timely takedowns to score points. Shevchenko, a counter fighter, tried to catch Nunes coming in and her best round was probably the fourth when she came forward more and landed damaging strikes.

The judges scored it 47-48, 48-47, and 48-47 for Nunes.

After the fight, Shevchenko said she disagreed with the decision and thought she won the first, second and fourth rounds, and more than half of the fifth, dismissing Nunes’ final takedown as simply “holding the position.”

Nunes said afterwards she injured her right foot during training and wanted to go five rounds to prove she was the best.

Jeremy Stephens and Gilbert Melendez earned Fight-of-the-Night honours while Rafael dos Anjos and Henry Cejudo earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

MAIN EVENT

AMANDA NUNES VS VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO)

WINNER: AMANDA NUNES VIA SD (47-48,48-47,48-47)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: AMANDA NUNES VIA UD

Andrews: Not a lot of action in the fight and most of it was initiated by Nunes, who pressured Shevcenko and scored enough points to win. I scored it 49-46 for Nunes as Shevcenko needs to understand that you have to beat the champion inherent eyes of the judges by being more aggressive and not waiting to counter for most of the fight.
