Brazilian light-heavyweight challenger Glover Teixeira (22-2-0) steps into the octagon with champion Jon “Bones” Jones (19-1-0) Saturday night at UFC 172.
It’s a tall order to defeat the six-time defending champ, the arguable P4P fighter with the 84-inch reach.
But armed with a 20-fight win streak, and some help from the Iceman himself, Glover Teixeira believes he can do it.
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
As the smaller fighter, Jones will enjoy his usual height and reach advantages unlike his last defence.
Jones comes in with an added intent to return to domination.
Which means the Brazilian will need to be aggressive but crafty in his exchanges.
That’s why he primarily looked to idol and mentor Chuck Liddell to help him prepare.
Like Jones, Glover has wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and striking. He’s shown in wins over Ryan Bader, Quinton Jackson and James Te Huna, that he has the heart to compete at the highest level.
But can he get inside? Dynamically execute and react to the unorthodox Jones? Can he change levels, execute the shot and take him down?
We know what Liddell thinks.
But Jones has proven to be almost unbeatable when he can utilize his range.
One thing is for sure: Liddell and Mike Tyson will be watching.
