The most recent Marvel picture Guardians of the Galaxy recently opened to rave reviews by the majority of enthusiastic fans.
I remember wondering if the film would finally cool off the superhero craze that’s gripped the industry since 2006 by my count.
The picture features a solid performance from yet another member of the combat sports community.
David Bautista, known to most as Batista when he wrestled for the WWE, told the media in interviews that when he finally learned that he secured the part of Drax, he pulled over to the side of the road and cried.
After a successful tenure in the WWE and a less than spectacular victorious MMA debut a few years ago, the big man is fully focused on building his acting career in the same veins of another fellow WWE superstar – and huge MMA fan: The Rock, Dwayne Johnson.
Johnson recently teamed up with UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey for the 6th instalment of the Fast and the Furious, another slick flick that jammed cash registers in 2013.
The Rowdy One now joins former women’s star Gina Carano in the FAF alumni.
Dana White is reportedly working on a title fight between the two later this year.
I remember the backlash that engulfed Johnson when he followed his dreams of making it in Hollywood.
He was a sellout, a guy who abandoned the former federation and its fans in hopes of greener pastures.
It never occurred to them that he had other dreams and goals.
That’s fame for ya.
It didn’t happen all at once, or quickly to be sure, but one cannot deny the doors his success has opened for others.
Now, it’s the fighters that are breaking the door down.
Randy Couture. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Cung Le. Georges St-Pierre.
