MMA Crossfire – UFC Fight Night 50: Jacare vs Mousasi predictions

The main event winner of UFC Fight Night 50 will probably not leapfrog them into a title fight with middleweight champ Chris Weidman, but for #4 Ronaldo Souza (20-3-0, 1 NC) and #7 Gegard Mousasi (35-4-2), it’s still an important opportunity to get closer.

Souza can keep his coveted top-five spot with a convincing win.

For Mousasi, it’s a chance to steal Souza’s spot and enter the title conversation.

At the weigh-ins, featherweight #14 Charles Oliveira (18-4-0, 1 NC) missed weight by four pounds and chose to waive 20 percent of his purse to opponent #8 Nik Lentz (27-6-2, 1 NC).

Oliveira did have the option to lose the weight in an additional three hours.

A special note to Canadian fans: UFC Fight Night 50 will not be on Sportsnet 360. This means you need UFC FightPass to watch it.

JOE “J-LAU” LAUZON (23-10-0) (155) VS MICHAEL “MAVERICK” CHIESA (11-1-0) (156)

Andrews: Chiesa admitted in the preamble to admiring Lauzon and his career, but vowed not to make the same mistake when he admired Jorge Masvidal. Chiesa has the striking advantage and will not want to take the fight to the floor until Lauzon has been softened with clinches, strikes and leg kicks. Then he can use his submissions or Jiu-Jitsu.

Lauzon has decent striking, but will want to land the shot to take advantage of his wrestling and keep Chiesa on his back.  But I see Chiesa ultimately controlling this fight and overcoming the power advantage of Lauzon.

Andrews Prediction: Michael Chiesa via unanimous decision.

MATT MITRIONE (7-3-0) (255) VS “THE BLACK BEAST” DERRICK LEWIS (11-2-0, 1 NC) (264)

Andrews: Both guys looked ready to go at the weigh-ins, but Mitrione is the more technical of the two. Lewis finished all of his wins, but Mitrione is the most skilled heavyweight he’s faced and other than the punchers chance, I expect Meathead to play it smart and put him away.

Andrews Prediction: Matt Mitrione via TKO.

#7 ALISTAIR “THE REEM” OVEREEM (37-13-0, 1 NC) (248) VS BEN ROTHWELL (33-9-0) (264)

UFC Fight Night

Andrews: Reem has been so inconsistent. He should be riding a 3-fight win streak into this, but has only a unimpressive win over Frank Mir to show. If Rothwell touches him or takes it to the ground, he could go down like Browne and Silva. But, I think Overeem will have his head together and use those striking skills to TKO Big Ben.

Andrews Prediction: Alistair Overeem via TKO.

MAIN EVENT

#4 RONALDO “JACARE” SOUZA (20-3-0, 1 NC) (185) VS #7 GERARD MOUSASI (35-4-2) (186)

Andrews: Both fighters excel on the ground, but Souza holds the striking advantage and that is the key to the fight. Mousasi has to get the fight to the ground, but Jacare will overcome him there, or catch him on the feet.

Andrews Prediction: RONALDO SOUZA VIA TKO.
