After The Crossfire – UPDATED – UFC 179: Aldo vs Mendes II

Jose Aldo outlasted featherweight challenger Chad Mendes en route to a unanimous decision five-round victory and a successful defence of his UFC belt.

All three judges scored the fight 49-46 for the champion.

Both men had their opportunities to finish each other, and the fight was without moments of controversy.

Mendes looked much improved from their UFC 142 encounter, utilizing the fast footwork, strikes and legkicks of his Team Alpha Male teammate TJ Dillashaw.

He stood in the pocket and forced the action, usually a dangerous tactic with Aldo.

But ultimately, Aldo used precision striking to respond to Mendes’ pressure.

Aldo and Mendes secured the Fight of the Night, while Fabio Maldonado and Gilbert Burns secured Performance of the Night honours. Each fighter secured a $50,000 USD bonus.

FABRICIO “MORANGO” CAMOES VS TONY MARTIN

NOTE: BOTH FIGHTERS MISSED WEIGHT

WISEMAN PREDICTION: FABRICIO CAMOES VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: TONY MARTIN VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: As I said in my prediction, it wasn’t in Camoes’ best interest to go to the mat with Martin. Now he knows since it only took 44 seconds for Martin to be able to clamp on a submission. Martin uses everything to get things to the mat quickly and tonight was no different. Martin is a complete savage on the mat, so it’s just not wise to go there with him regardless of how comfortable or confident one may be about their own ground game. Fantastic showing once again by Martin.

GILBERT ” DURINHO” BURNS VS CHRISTOS GIAGOS

UFC 179

WISEMAN PREDICTION: GILBERT BURNS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: GILBERT BURNS VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: Burns is just a savage on the mat. Giagos did his best to use butterfly guard, tried to push off the cage, he really did it all. However, Burns just countered any defense Giagos had. Fantastic transitioning, power, and persistence. A perfect submission by Burns with only seconds left in the first round.

FELIPE “SERTANEJO” ARANTES VS ANDRE “TOUCHY” FILI

UFC 179

WISEMAN PREDICTION: ANDRE FILI VIA TKO

WINNER: ANDRE FILI VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: From a jiu jitsu chess match, to a grappling show, to a battle of the takedowns these guys showed skill tonight. Arantes won in the damage department thanks to numerous elbows, but ultimately it was Fili’s ability to get off his back and transition to inflict punishment of his own that gave him the match.

SCOTT “YOUNG GUNS” JORGENSEN VS WILSON REIS

UFC 179

NOTE: JORGENSEN MISSED WEIGHT.

WISEMAN PREDICTION: SCOTT JORGENSEN VIA SPLIT-DECISION

WINNER: WILSON REIS VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: Jorgensen was showing speed and movement early in the first round, but ultimately it was the body kick from Reis that started the fall of Jorgensen. Reis took advantage of the fact that he knocked the wind out of Jorgensen, clamped on a submission, and got the tap. A quick and technical showing by Reis.

WILLIAM “PATOLINO” MACARIO VS NEIL MAGNY

UFC 179

Neil Magny punches William “Patalino” Macario of Brazil in their welterweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: WILLIAM MACARIO VIA TKO

WINNER: NEIL MAGNY VIA TKO

Wiseman: Magny wanted to push the pace from the beginning of the match and while he didn’t push it all that much in the first, he was consistent and scored the TKO finish. His 5th win of 2014, tying the record with Roger Huerta. He was able to use his reach, long jab, and takedowns filled with ground-and-pound to really test Macario. Unfortunately for Macario, he didn’t have an answer to counter the range of Magny.

YAN CABRAL VS NAOYUKI KOTANI

UFC 179

Yan Cabral of Brazil punches Naoyuki Kotani of Japan in their lightweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: NAOYUKI KOTANI VIA TKO

WINNER: YAN CABRAL VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: For making this weight cut for the first time, Cabral set a high pace and kept it going. Kotani ended up with a nasty cut over his eye at the end of the first, then Cabral weighed down on Kotani to transition for a rear naked choke. Impressive fight by Cabral.

DIEGO FERREIRA VS BERNEIL DARIUSH

UFC 179

Diego Ferreira of Brazil punches Beneil Dariush in their lightweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: DIEGO FERREIRA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: BERNEIL DARIUSH VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: Ferreira took this fight on short notice, so it’s to be expected that his cardio would fail. Dariush capitalized on take downs, but didn’t really do a ton. Ferreira tried to get up in rounds two and three, but got tired. A dominant fight by Dariush, but I personally don’t like grind win fights, so it was boring for me.

#13 DARREN “THE DAMAGE” ELKIN VS LUCAS “MINEIRO” MARTINS

UFC 179

Darren Elkins punches Lucas Martins of Brazil in their featherweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: LUCAS MARTINS VIA TKO

WINNER:DARREN ELKINS VIA SPLIT-DECISION

Wiseman: I expected more action, but it was a grinding match where little action happened. Elkins used his clinch game to keep Martins against the cage. Martins was unable to get anything going other than take down defence. Another boring, against the cage without action fight.

#15 FABIO MALDONADO VS HANS STRINGER

UFC 179

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva celebrates with Fabio Maldonado of Brazil after his TKO victory over Hans Stringer of The Netherlands in their light heavyweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: FABIO MALDONADO VIA TKO

WINNER: FABIO MALDONADO VIA TKO

Wiseman: Maldonaldo kept the pressure going until he broke Stringer. After the takedown, Maldonaldo unloaded with vicious ground-and-pound until the ref stepped in. Fantastic. To top it off, Anderson Silva jumped up on the cage to thank and congratulate his friend. Amazing moment.

#4 GLOVER TEIXEIRA VS #6 PHIL “MR. WONDERFUL” DAVIS

UFC 179

Phil Davis kicks Glover Teixeira of Brazil in their light heavyweight bout during the UFC 179 event at Maracanazinho on October 25, 2014 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: PHIL DAVIS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: PHIL DAVIS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: It was a typical Davis fight, take down followed by lay-and-pray. That plan was followed perfectly. Texetira was unable to do anything, but other than weigh down on his opponent, Davis didn’t do anything either. His striking looked better, but against Jon Jones? Ummm…. No.

MAIN EVENT

JOSE “JUNIOR” ALDO VS #1 CHAD “MONEY” MENDES

UFC 179: Aldo v Mendes 2

WISEMAN PREDICTION: JOSE ALDO VIA TKO

WINNER: JOSE ALDO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: Both fighters rocked each other, both had incredible kicks, just a tough fight to call. Mendes did throw more and scored take downs, but the precision striking of Aldo say amazing. To my surprise, it went the distance for a decision win for Aldo. I didn’t have it unanimous, but I still had him winning.
