Many Crossfire readers will be trick-or-treating on Halloween night in one form or another.
So we just had to share a Halloween story, courtesy of martial arts pioneer, Mike Swain.
Swain made history becoming the first American to win the Judo world championships in 1987. He also won the bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
His wife Tania represented Brazil in the 1992 Olympic Games while his father-in-law Chiakii Ishii won the bronze medal in the 1972 Olympic summer games.
He successfully transitioned to the business world of MMA floor mats, creating Swain Sports, which he later sold to Dollamur Sport Surfaces in 2008, where he is vice-president of their Global Martial Arts division.
It’s no surprise all of the UFC gyms and the Ultimate Fighter shows use his Dollamur Flexi-Roll mats.
In the meantime, enjoy this Halloween story.
Mike Swain: My wife, who is from Brazil, she never had Halloween in Brazil. So at our first Halloween, when I opened the door, she couldn’t believe it that these kids were coming to the door, looking for candy. Because I told her, “You gotta go get candy, because these kids are going to come by.” Finally, she does all of that for the first Halloween.
Fast forward, twenty years later.
Our house is now the most decorated. She’s got so many Halloween boxes in the attic (of candy) that I bring out ever year now (laughs). We have an annual Swain Halloween party where all of the kids and my students come to our house. They take their kids around first and then they end up at my house and we party until late in the morning. It’s become the biggest holiday in the Swain household now that my wife found out about it.
I was never a big Halloween guy, but now all of a sudden, this has all been forced upon me.
MMA Crossfire: So you don’t remember any of your own Halloween costumes then.
Mike Swain: To be honest with you, I don’t.
MMA Crossfire: (Laughs). And maybe, it’s better that way.
Mike Swain: (Laughs). I come up with my costume about thirty minutes before that doorbell rings.
Happy Halloween everyone!
