After The Crossfire – UPDATED – UFC 185: Pettis vs dos Anjos

Rafael dos Anjos and Joanna Jedrzejczyk  came through with spectacular performances to become new champions at UFC 185.

It was a great moment for dos Anjos as he held his son in the centre of the cage while being interviewed by Joe Rogan as the new lightweight champion.

Pettis said afterwards he couldn’t see out of his right eye via the first punch of the night from the Brazilian.

Jedrzecjzyk, who hails from Poland, completely neutralized the wrestling pedigree of Carla Esparza, securing a second round TKO en route to becoming the new strawweight champion.

Welcome back to The Crossfire.

UFC FIGHT PASS EARLY PRELIMS

LARISSA PACHECO VS #15 GERMAINE DE RANDAMIE

UFC 185

ANDREWS PREDICTION: LARISSA PACHECO VIA TKO.

WINNER: GERMAINE DE RANDAMIE VIA 2ND ROUND TKO 2:02

Andrews: I really thought Pacheco would figure it out, but when Randamie outclassed her on the feet, there ws nowhere for her to take the fight to. Good win for De Randamie, but now she needs some higher-level opponents.

JAKE LINDSEY VS JOSEPH DUFFY

UFC 185

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JOE DUFFY VIA TKO

WINNER: JOE DUFFY VIA  FIRST ROUND TKO 1:47

Andrews: Duffy went in there and took care of business quickly. He took out The Librarian with an impressive headlock and then attacked the body that forced the ref to stop the bout. Rogan said that he talked to Firas Zahabi and he will move down to 145 to find McGregor. Interesting.

SERGIO PETTIS VS RYAN BENOIT

UFC 185

ANDREWS PREDICTION: SERGIO PETTIS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: RYAN BENOIT VIA 2ND ROUND TKO

Andrews: I mentioned in my prediction the Pettis needed to be careful on the feet and Benoit showed why. After Pettis won the first round, Benoit caught Pettis with a left hook in an exchange and that was it. It was a great win for Benoit but the poor sportsmanship afterwards put a damper on that. Why did he kick Pettis after the bell?

TSN PRELIMS

JARED ROSHOLT VS JOSH COPELAND

ANDREWS PREDICTION:  JARED ROSHOLT VIA TKO

WINNER: JARED ROSHOLT VIA TKO

Andrews: After a cautious first round that he lost, Rosholt turned up the heat with some takedowns and ground-and-pound. Copland landed landed a good right hand in the first round, but could keep Rosholt off him on the ground. A good win for Rosholt.

DARON CRUICKSHANK VS BENEIL DARIUSH

UFC 185

ANDREWS PREDICTION: BENEIL DARIUSH VIA SUBMISSION

WINNER:BENEIL DARIUSH VIA 2ND ROUND SUBMISSION 2:48

WINNER: The left body kicks of Dariush set up Cruickshank’s second round demise. After breaking down Cruickshank with it, Daron tried to take the BJJ expert to the ground which played into Dariush’s hands. No only did he lose, since he did’t make weight, he kicks in an extra 20% of his purse to Dariush. An impressive win for Dariush.

ELIAS THEODOROU VS ROGER NARVAEZ

UFC 175

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ELIAS THEODOROU VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: ELIAS THEODOROU VIA 2ND ROUND TKO 4:07

Andrews: Theodorou overcame the tough Narvaez and secured a TKO late in the second round, but not before taking some shots. A good win for The Spartan.

ROSS PEARSON VS SAM STOUT

UFC 185

Ross Pearson stands on the scale during the UFC 185 weigh-ins at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on March 13, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ROSS PEARSON VIA TKO

WINNER: ROSS PEARSON VIA TKO

Andrews: Pearson beat Stone to the punch, landing a big left hook ala Carlos Condit-Dan Hardy. Great win for Pearson. I said in my prediction that if Stone lost convincingly, he would probably retire soon afterwards. Well, he lost convincingly. Let’s see what happens.

MAIN CARD

CHRIS CARIASO VS HENRY CEJUDO

UFC 185

Opponents Chris Cariaso and Henry Cejudo face off during the UFC 185 Ultimate Media Day at the American Airlines Center on March 12, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: HENRY CEJUDO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: HENRY CEJUDO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Andrews: A great performance by Cejudo as he did everything but finish Cariaiso. He showed excellent cardio and pressure, frustrating Cariaiso everywhere the fight went. It is impressive to beat a top-5 fighter in only your second fight. He wants a top-5 next; give him one.

#8 ROY NELSON VS #9 ALISTAIR OVEREEM

UFC 185

Roy Nelson faces off with Alistair Overeem during the UFC 185 weigh-ins at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on March 13, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ROY NELSON VIA TKO

WINNER: ALEXANDER OVEREEM VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Andrews: This was a good performance by Overeem and yet his showboating and overconfidence almost lost him the fight again. He landed numerous kicks and strikes, yet he couldn’t finish Nelson. That’s should be disconcerting to Overeem and his camp. He could not get away with this showboating against Travis Browne and Antonio Silva.

#1 JOHNY HENDRICKS VS #5 MATT BROWN

UFC 185

Johny Hendricks faces off with Matt Brown during the UFC 185 weigh-ins at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on March 13, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JOHNY HENDRICKS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

WINNER: JOHNY HENDRICKS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Andrews: Hendricks used his wrestling to neutralize the standup of Matt Brown, landing seven of eight takedowns. He slipped in some striking but kept Brown scrambling to defend himself. IT was a good performance, but I don’t know if this will work against Lawler. He needs a finish in that title fight.

CARLA ESPARZA VS #1 JOANNA JEDRZECZYK

UFC 185

UFC women’s strawweight champion Carla Esparza and opponent Joanna Jedrzejczyk of Poland face off during the UFC 185 Ultimate Media Day at the American Airlines Center on March 12, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: CARLA ESPARZA VIA SUBMISSION

WINNER: JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK VIA TKO

Andrews: No one saw this shockingly lopsided fight. The standup of Joanna proved to be too much for Carla. She only landed one takedown out of nine attempts. She needs to work on her striking and get back in there.

MAIN EVENT

ANTHONY PETTIS VS RAFAEL DOS ANJOS

UFC 185

Anthony Pettis faces off with Rafael Dos Anjos during the UFC 185 weigh-ins at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on March 13, 2015 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ANTHONY PETTIS VIA TKO

WINNER:  RAFAEL DOS ANJOS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (50-45,-50-45,50-45)

Andrews: Total domination by dos Anjos, literally from the first punch he threw. An excellent performance and gameplan, executing the Clay Guida gameplan. Pettis lost the vision of his right eye from the first round and could not compensate. He will be back. But for now, it’s a great moment for Brazil and dos Anjos.
