UFC women’s bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey flattened No. 5 Brazilian Bethe Correia with a knee and barrage of punches that forced referee John McCarthy to stop the bout 34 seconds into the first frame at UFC 190.
Correia officially landed nine significant shots that did register on Rousey’s face, but the impressive thing was that Rousey stood and outstruck Correia with 19 significant shots in total, many against the cage in the final seconds.
After the fight, she told Correia, “Don’t cry,” which was what Corriea said to her at the weigh-ins.
Rousey dedicated the match to her hero “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, the WWE Hall-of-Fame wrestler who passed away on Thursday.
Rousey, and Demian Maia earned performance-of-the-night bonuses, while Mauricio Rua and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira earned Fight-of-the-Night honours. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.
The UFC will return to Brazil November 5th, with the main event being Vitor Belfort against Dan Henderson. Moe fights are expected to be announced in the future.
MMA Crossfire Expert Cassie Wiseman checks in:
UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS
HUGO VIANA VS GUIDO “NINJA” CANNETTI
WINNER: GUIDO CANNETTI VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: GUIDO CANNETTI VIA SUBMISSION
Wiseman: As expected, Viana showed fantastic kicks, however that was where it ended. As I predicted, Cannetti used his ground game to stay away from trouble, his knees did damage in the clinch, and his powerful striking made Viana second-guess himself. A close fight, but Cannetti with Ta decision win.
VITOR MIRANDA VS CLINT HESTER
WINNER: VITOR MIRANDA VIA TKO R2 2:38
WISEMAN PREDICTION: VITOR MIRANDA VIA SUBMISSION
Wiseman: Hester with his lack of ground game, was no match for Miranda. Miranda was the superior fighter in the standup game, but really did all his damage on the mat from top position. Hester’s lack of ground game prevented him from controlling Miranda in any way, shape, or form. Miranda secured the TKO finish in the second round.
TSN 2 PRELIMS
#13 LURI ALCANTARA VS LEANDRO ISSA
WINNER: LURI ALCANTARA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: LURI ALCANTARA VIA TKO
Wiseman: Alcantara came out aggressive in the first round which allowed the superior grappling of Issa to put Alcantara in a bad position for the majority of the round. However, Alcantara put his game together and used his strong striking in the second and third rounds to dominate.
WARLLEY ALVES VS NORDINE TALEB
WINNER: WARLLEY ALVES VIA SUBMISSION
WISEMAN PREDICTION: WARLLEY ALVES VIA SUBMISSION R2 4:11
Wiseman: Alves used his striking and incredible takedown defence to give Taleb a run for his money. Taleb, who hasn’t lost since 2012, couldn’t get up when he was taken down, then when he did get up, he only pressed against the cage rather than doing something to score points. Alves kept the pace high, while still fighting smart. Alves moved into submission position in the second round for a tapout.
#10 RAFAEL CAVALCANTE VS #14 PATRICK CUMMINS
WINNER: PATRICK CUMMINS VIA TKO R3 0:45
WISEMAN PREDICTION: PATRICK CUMMINS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Wiseman: As expected, the wrestling of Cummins and the grinding pace that he kept tested the tank of Cavalcante. The final round had Cummins even more amped up, scored a takedown, and unleashed a load of elbows which busted up Cavalcante for a stoppage. Crazy finish, but awesome win for Cummins.
#6 DEMIAN MAIA VS #13 NEIL MAGNY
WINNER: DEMIAN MAIA VIA SUBMISSION R2 2:52
WISEMAN PREDICTION: NEIL MAGNY VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Wiseman: Maia forgot what brought him to success in the UFC in the beginning. Tonight, he remembered what gave him fame, his BJJ. He is the best-of-the-best, tonight he used that and gave Magny a clinic. In the second round, he caught Maia with the rear-naked choke.
#1 CLAUDIA GADELHA VS #15 JESSICA AGUILAR
WINNER: CLAUDIA GADELHA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: CLAUDIA GADELHA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Wiseman: While Aguilar showed that she can take a smack, Claudia and her striking is just at another level. Her power was consistent throughout the fight and her perfect timing for takedown really gave her the edge.
#12 ANTONIO SILVA VS SOA PALELEI
WINNER: ANTONIO SILVA VIA TKO R2 0:41
WISEMAN PREDICTION: SOA PALELEI VIA TKO
Wiseman: Palelei needed to throw more to really test the jaw of Bigfoot. However, it was Bigfoot in the second round with a few vicious knees. Knees matched with his fists made for a bad night for Palelei.
#15 STEFAN STRUVE VS MINOTAURO NOGUEIRA
WINNER: STEFAN STRUVE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: STEFAN STRUVE VIA TKO
Wiseman: It was a back-and-forth fight, both connected with good shots at certain points in the match. However, Struve scored more strikes throughout the 15-minute match. Struve still needs to work on his ability to use his reach. He was consistently putting Nog in a Thai clinch yet didn’t throw knees or anything, so it was pointless. Still a lot of work to do.
REGINALDO VIEIRA VS DILENO LOPES
WINNER: REGINALDO VIEIRA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: REGINALDO VIEIRA VIA SUBMISSION
Wiseman: This fight was a back-and-forth battle with both fighters leaving it all inside the octagon. From a submission battle to a striking war. Great show of heart by these guys, but Vieira outstruck Lopes to end the final round on top landing vicious ground-and-pound. He is the new TUF Brazil bantamweight winner.
GLAICO FRANCA VS FERNANDO BRUNO
WINNER: GLAICO FRANCA VIA SUBMISSION R3 4:46
WISEMAN PREDICTION: GLAICO FRANCA VIA TKO
Wiseman: It was a grappling matchup. These guys were throwing for days when striking, but grappling and the pace set really tested the gas tank of both fighters. Francas tank was superior at the end and he was able to get a rear naked choke with seconds remaining in the final round.
#8 MAURICIO RUA VS #11 ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUEIRA
WINNER: MAURICIO RUA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
WISEMAN PREDICTION: MAURICIO RUA VIA TKO
Wiseman: The boxing of Lil Nog was on point again tonight while the leg kicks worked for Rua. He also scored with a few takedowns, while trying to stay away from the striking of Lil Nog. After 15 mins of fighting, it was Ruan who outscored Lil Nog.
(C) “ROWDY” RONDA ROUSEY (11-0-0) VS #5 BETHE “PITBULL” CORREIA
WINNER: RONDA ROUSEY VIA TKO R1 0:34
WISEMAN PREDICTION: RONDA ROUSEY VIA SUBMISSION
Wiseman: Could Ronda outstrike someone? Well here it was. Ronda may have come into the UFC an armbar queen, but she has worked her ass off to become a well rounded machine. Just a beast.
