The 25th anniversary of Tony Award nominated Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Divas Simply Singing! HIV/AIDS benefit show will take place August 22nd at the Dell Music Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Created in 1990 under Ralph’s D.I.V.A. Foundation charity umbrella as a platform to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS, the benefit gala show features performances by some of the most talented artists in the United States.
Ralph was one of the earliest and is one of the most vocal supporters for those suffering with HIV/AIDS. She is known for her performances as Deena Jones in the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls and Deidra Mitchell in the television sitcom Moesha.
In a 2009 interview with Kenai Andrews, Ralph shared some of her motivations for Divas Simply Singing!
“When I saw my friends starting to drop dead from a mysterious disease [HIV/AIDS] that no one wanted to talk about,” she explained. “What they always wanted to say was that it was that gay disease and what I always felt was a human disease.
“I always thought had we cared then in the midst of those terrible times – which was right in the middle of the greatest time of my life – we wouldn’t be in some of the positions we are in now.”
Featured performances include Faith Evans, A’ngela Winbush, Neil’s Morgan, Monifah, Candace Benson, and Philadelphia’s Carol Riddick.
The event will also include on-site testing and testimonies of those impacted by HIV/AIDS, as well as information and resources from related organizations.
It is expected to air on television on October 24th.
