MMA Crossfire – Etihad Stadium to host Australia’s first title fight at UFC 193

The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today Melbourne’s UFC 193 will hold the Australia’s first title fight and it’s a particularly interesting one at that.

Welterweight champion Robbie Lawler (26-10-0, 1NC), coming off an impressive defence against Rory MacDonald at UFC 190, will defend against former interim champion Carlos Condit (30-8-0) November 15th.

Etihad Stadium holds approximately 70,000 people and we’re betting that UFC 193 will be one of the biggest UFC shows ever.

The UFC even has a special microsite for fans to get pre-access to tickets and event information.

“Finally the UFC is coming to Melbourne in what will be the biggest UFC event EVER!” said UFC president Dana White. “There’s been a lot of talk about Melbourne, title fights and stadium shows. The UFC is doing all three at the Etihad Stadium in front of 70,000 people. Australia has been an amazing market for the UFC and to thank the Aussies for all of their support we are bringing the superstar of the welterweight division, UFC World Champion Robbie Lawler.  He will be facing the always-exciting “Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit. Robbie Lawler is coming off of the most exciting title defense in welterweight history.

“We are also bringing the rematch of the greatest heavyweight fight I have ever seen between New Zealand legend Mark Hunt vs. Big Foot Silva. November 15 is going to be insane!”

Lawler has won seven of his last eight fights, while Condit returned from an injury loss to Tyron Woodley to stop Thiago Alves earlier in May.

This will be Lawler’s first fight outside of his native United States.

Many Australian fans will be glad to hear of the addition of Hunt and Silva. The two put on one of the most memorable UFC heavyweight bouts of all-time, battling to a majority draw.

Silva tested postive afterwards for elevated levels of testosterone and suspended nine months. He is coming off a comeback win over Soa Palely at UFC 190.

Hunt needs to get back into the win column after getting stopped by Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic in his last two contests.

Other bouts include:

Sydney’s Robert Whittaker (14-4-0) vs England’s Michael Bisping (28-7-0)

Australian Kyle Noke (20-7-1) vs Germany’s Peter Sobotta (15-4-1)

Sydney’s Anthony Perosh (15-9-0) vs USA’s Gian Villante (13-5-0)

Melbourne’s Daniel Kelly (9-1-0) vs USA’s Ricardo Abreu (5-2-0)

Sydney’s Ricard Walsh (8-4-0) vs Morley’s Steve Kennedy (22-7-0)

Additional bouts are expected to be announced.

Tickets will be available to the general public Monday, September 21st at 10AM AEST, with UFC Fight Club members getting first dibs at Monday, September 14th at 10AM AEST and UFC Newsletter members getting pre-access Wednesday, September 16th at 10AM AEST.
