Invicta FC bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger (15-6-0) defends for the first time against undefeated Swedish challenger Pannie “Sexy Scramble” Kianzad (8-0-0) tomorrow at Invicta FC 14 in Kansas City.
Evinger won the title at Invicta FC 13. It’s being billed as grit vs slick.
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
The show is being streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
MMA Crossfire Expert Kenai Andrews checks in with his picks on the card.
RACHEL WILEY (0-0-0) VS FELICIA SPENCER (0-0-0)
Andrews: Both are making their professional debuts. Spencer is from Montreal and sports a 5-1 amateur record. Her strength is her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Wiley is the hometown hero, with a 6-2-0 amateur record. My gut says Wiley will have problems if the fight gets to the ground and and she will win by some wrestling and striking to score enough points on the feet.
Andrews Prediction: Rachel Willey via unanimous decision.
ASPEN LADD (1-0-0) VS AMANDA BOBBY COOPER (1-0-0)
Andrews: Ladd has a TKO win at Invicta FC 11, so we know her striking is formidable. Cooper is making her Invicta FC debut and I’m going with her with the upset. She needs to get the fight to the ground though, which I think she will before Ladd can pile up the points.
Andrews Prediction: Amanda Bobby Cooper via submission.
JJ ALDRICH (1-1-0) VS ROSA ACEVEDO (3-1-0)
Andrews: If Aldrich can keep the fight on the feet, she can use her striking to get the decision, but it’s hard to overlook Acevedo’s submission and knockout wins. Aldrich’s experience advantage will not be enough, as I think Acevedo overcomes the Invicta FC jitters and chalks up another one for the underdogs.
Andrews Prediction: ROSA ACEVEDO VIA SUBMISSION.
JINH YU FREY (3-1-0) VS LIZ MCCARTHY (2-2-0)
Andrews: Frey didn’t make weight in her last fight, but used her striking to get the submission win. She is the better fighter on paper, but as always, she needs to prove it by executing.
Andrews Prediction: Jinh Yu Frey via unanimous decision.
JAMIE MOYLE (3-0-0) VS SHARON JACOBSON (3-1-0)
Andrews: Moyle surprised me with her performance in her submission win at Invicta FC 13. This should be a good matchup. The experience factor screams out here. This fight will go everywhere and in the end, Moyle should emerge with the win.
Andrews Prediction: Jamie Moyle via unanimous decision.
CINDY DANDOIS (5-2-0) VS MEGAN ANDERSON (4-1-0)
Andrews: Dandois lost to the headliner Avenger at Invicta FC 10 and should be able to use the experience to welcome the taller Anderson to Invicta. They both seem fairly evenly matched up, but I’m expecting Dandois’ experience to make the difference.
Andrews Prediction: Cindy Dandois via unanimous decision.
RACHAEL OSTOVICH (2-1-0) VS ANDREA LEE (2-1-0)
Andrews: Ostovich barely won her debut fight, but showed good takedown defence. Lee came in on short notice and lost a split-decision to Roxanne Modafferi. They both have spunk, but Ostrich’s judo throws and power will the difference.
Andrews Prediction: Rachael Ostovich via split-decision.
ROXANNE MODAFFERI (17-12-0) VS MARIANA MORAIS (9-2-0)
Andrews: Modafferi is one of the most experienced Invicta fighters out there and here she welcomes the 19-year-old submission specialist Morais. But I can’t see Modafferi not wanting to keep the fight standing because thats the best way for her to win. If Morais can get the fight to the ground, then she can win, but I don’t see her being able to do that.
Andrews Prediction: Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision.
KATJA KANKAANPAA (10-2-1) VS DEANNA BENNETT (7-0-0)
Andrews: This is a great matchup. Katja is easily the best opponent she will face thus far. She can strike and work on the ground. She’s also smarting from losing the belt to Souza, which makes her even more dangerous. Deanna can do the same, but hasn’t fought at Katja’s level. It’s a toss-up, but I’m going with Kankaanpaa.
Andrews Prediction: Katja Kankaanpaavia split-decision.
(C) TONYA EVINGER (16-5-0) VS PANNIE KIANZAD (8-0-0)
Andrews: Kianzad has solid all-round skills, but needs to bring it against a tough gritty champion. I don’t think Kianzad has enough to hurt Evinger and enough to keep the fight standing. Meanwhile, we’ve seen Evinger take the starch out of a lot of opponents.
Andrews Prediction: Tonya Evinger via unanimous decision.
