After The Crossfire – UPDATED – UFC 192: Cormier vs Gustafsson

Daniel Cormier outslugged Alexander Gustafsson to retain his UFC light-heavyweight crown at UFC 192 in Houston, Texas.

Cormier used uppercut strikes and a grinding pressure to wear down Gustafsson, who like in the Jones fight started off quick with unexpected takedowns and strikes that also wore down the champion.

The judges scored it 47-48, 48-47 and 49-46 for DC.

Cormier and Gustafsson secured Fight-of-the-Night honours, while Albert Tumenov and Adriano Martins earned Performances-of-the-Night, earning an additional $50,000 USD each.

MMA Crossfire Expert Cassie Wiseman shares her thoughts:

UFC FIGHT PASS EARLY PRELIMS

DERRICK LEWIS VS VIKTOR PESTA

WINNER: DERRICK LEWIS VIA TKO R3 1:15

WISEMAN PREDICTION: VIKTOR PESTA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: An entertaining match, and it took Lewis a little while to get warmed up, but when he did…wow! The final round was all Lewis pounding the exhausted Pesta. Lewis got the TKO finish with much pride. Great way to start the night.

#10 CHRIS CARIASO VS SERGIO PETTIS

WINNER: SERGIO PETTIS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-27, 29-27, 29-28)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: SERGIO PETTIS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: Pettis used his timing and takedowns to dominate the first and second round. The final round had Cariaso controlling on top for the majority of the round, then finishing with a nasty heel hook. However, it was too little too late. He needed a finish, but didn’t get it. Pettis with a decision win.

FRANCISCO TREVINO VS SAGE NORTHCUTT

WINNER: SAGE NORTHCUTT VIA TKO R1 0:57

WISEMAN PREDICTION: SAGE NORTHCUTT VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: A load of heat coming behind him and he certainly didn’t disappoint. He was able to take advantage of a slip, then just hammered him with shots. Transitioned to a takedown and landed a load of elbows. Only a matter of seconds for a win. Not bad for his first showing inside the octagon. He showed great food work, timing, speed, and power. Impressive.

TSN 2 PRELIMS

ADRIANO MARTINS VS ISLAM MAKHACHEV

WINNER: ADRIANO MARTINS VIA TKO R1 1:46

WISEMAN PREDICTION: ADRIANO MARTINS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: What is there to say? They both came out striking, but Martins just hit with the perfect counter that flattened Islam. The end. Perfect counter striking.

#4 ROSE NAMAJUNAS VS ANGELA HILL

WINNER: ROSE NAMAJUNAS VIA SUBMISSION R1 2:47

WISEMAN PREDICTION: ROSE NAMAJUNAS VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: In the striking and clinch game Hill was doing well. She handled herself, better than expected I guess. However, Namajunas only needs a second for her to be able to jump on a submission position. Crazy talented. Namajunas secured Hill’s back and clinched on a tight rear naked choke.

ALAN JOUBAN VS ALBERT TUMENOV

WINNER:ALBERT TUMENOV VIA TKO R1 2:55

WISEMAN PREDICTION: ALBERT TUMENOV VIA TKO

Wiseman: As I expected, the style and power of Tumenov is something not many would be able to handle. Joubon is talented but ultimately it was the precise power of Tumenov that gave him the TKO finish.

#1 JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ VS #14 ALI BAGAUTINOV

WINNER: JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27. 30-27, 29-28)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: Really there wasn’t a lot happening in this match. Ultimately it was a cardio problem because Ali just throws with everything he has each time. Joseph didn’t show enough to be able to do anything with DJ, but he can still dream I guess.

YAIR RODRIGUEZ VS DANIEL HOOKER

WINNER: YAIR RODRIGUEZ VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: YAIR RODRIGUEZ VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: A great fight with loads of energy. Striking and ground game, this fight had it all. Ultimately, Yair did more throughout the fight to get the decision win, even with a broken foot.

MAIN CARD

#6 JESSICA EYE VS #12 JULIANNA PENA

WINNER: JULIANNA PENA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-27, 29-27, 29-27)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: JULIANNA PENA VIA TKO

Wiseman: The striking advantage went to Eye, but the ground game was for Pena. Since the majority of the fight was on the ground Pena got the decision win. A solid fight, but a long way to go before she is ready for Rousey.

SHAWN JORDAN VS RUSLAN MAGOMEDOV

WINNER: RUSLAN MAGOMEDOV VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

WISEMAN PREDICTION:  SHAWN JORDAN VIA TKO

Wiseman: The gas tank really was the disadvantage for Jordan. Magomedov avoided power shots with his foot work. He countered and did a load of damage with kicks. Jordan looked busted by the end of the fight, but really he needs to get his cardio in check.

#4 RYAN BADER VS #5 RASHAD EVANS

WINNER: RYAN BADER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION  (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: RASHAD EVANS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: Bader showed that his striking has improved vastly. He went against a wrestler and showed improved footwork. Great performance for Bader. Evans just needs to fight a little more. He was rusty and didn’t let his hands go enough.

#1 JOHNY HENDRICKS VS #3 TYRON WOODLEY

NOTE: THIS FIGHT WAS CANCELLED DUE TO HENDRICKS’ WEIGHT CUTTING ISSUES.

MAIN EVENT

(C) DANIEL  CORMIER VS #2 ALEXANDER GUSTAFSSON

WINNER: DANIEL CORMIER VIA SPLIT-DECISION (47-48,48-47, 49-46)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: DANIEL CORMIER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: The surprising factor of this match was that Gus scored more takedowns than DC. However, it was the pace, pressure, and number of strikes landed that gave Cormier the split-decision win. The most entertaining fight I’ve seen from Cormier, so in that way, I had both fighters winning because they brought out the best in the other.
