It’s hard to go after a card like UFC 193, but welterweights #13-ranked Neil Magny (16-5-0) and #15-ranked Kelvin Gastelum (12-1-0) will try to give the fans an encore in Monterrey, Mexico Saturday night.
It will be interesting to see if Gastelum can make weight comfortably, as he’s had problems in the past. Magny is also taking this fight on short notice, replacing the injured Matt Brown.
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
MMA Crossfire Expert Cassie Wiseman checks in to share her thoughts on the main card.
MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)
EFRAIN “HECHO AN MEXICO” ESCUDERO (25-9-0) VS LEANDO “BUSCAPE” SILVA (15-2-1, 1NC)
Wiseman: Both of these guys have been inconsistent, but very entertaining. The ground game is just mind-numbing from these two, so you can expect a clinic on the mat. Escudero has faced higher quality fighters for a longer period of time, so he has the advantage there. Realistically, I suspect him to handle the first fight of the main card better, so his takedowns and submission transitions will prevail over Silva.
Wiseman Prediction: Efrain Escudero via unanimous decision.
HORACIO “THE PUNISHER” GUTIEREZ (3-1-0) VS ENRIQUE “EL FUERTA” (11-2-1)
Wiseman: Gutierrez is the more well rounded fighter when we break things down. Barzola is a great striker and very powerful. Gutierrez comes from a Muay Thai background, but also has a submission game. Gutierrez is the more aggressive fighter which will force Barzola to go on the defense quickly, setting things up for Gutierrez to enforce his game plan early.
Wiseman Prediction: Horacio Gutierrez via TKO.
ERIK “PERRY” MONTANO (6-3-0) VS ENRIQUE “WASABL” MARIN (8-2-0)
Wiseman: Both of these guys have the basics when it comes to the ground game, but ultimately every fight starts standing and that’s exactly what Marin likes. He is a force to be reckoned with in the kick boxing department, so expect him to be aggressive as he continues to push his 7-fight winning streak into 8 here in his UFC debut.
Wiseman Prediction: Enrique Marin via TKO.
#3 JUSSIER FORMIGA (18-3-0) VS #5 HENRY “THE MESSENGER” CEJUDO (9-0-0)
Wiseman: The problem for Formiga is that in order to bring things to his playing field he will need to get Cejudo to the mat. Easier said than done. Cejudo is good at defending takedowns, his wrestling is on point, and his boxing is at a different level. Formiga’s striking isn’t where it needs to be, especially against a Golden Glove boxer like Cejudo.
Wiseman Prediction: Henry “The Messenger” Cejudo via TKO.
#4 RICARDO “THE BULLY” LAMAS (15-4-0) VS DIEGO “THE NIGHTMARE” SANCHEZ (27-7-0)
Wiseman: What weight category is Sanchez going to end up in next? This guy is all over the place and the problem is that while he is extremely entertaining, he throws technique out the window and tries to turn everything into a slugfest. Lamas who is the more technical striker and who fights long, will use his stance to move out of the way from Sanchez’s forward march, cut angles for counter strikes, and get the win.
Wiseman Prediction: Ricardo “The Bully” Lamas via unanimous decision.
#13 NEIL MAGNY (16-5-0) VS #15 KELVIN GASTELUM (12-1-0)
Wiseman: Hard one to call because Magny has reach and he knows how to use it. Also, he has fought a million times this year, but I love how he is always challenging himself. Gastelum made weight, so that is a victory already for him. Now that that battle is over, he can focus on using his speed and angles to really put on a show. The power and wrestling advantage go to Gastelum, and when Gastelum puts pressure on Magny, I don’t see him being able to handle it.
Wiseman Prediction: Kelvin Gastelum via TKO.
