Champions have taken a battering in 2015. dos Anjos gets his turn at bat tomorrow night against Cowboy Donald Cerrone (28-6-0, 1NC).
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
MMA Crossfire Expert Cassie Wiseman checks in with her thoughts on the main card:
RANDA “THE QUIET STORM” MARKOS (5-3-0) VS KAROLINA KOWALKIEWICZ (7-0-0)
Wiseman: Another fighter from Poland, making her debut with a perfect record. Markos is a scrapper who puts her head down and just keeps coming forward. Her heart reminds me a little of Frankie Edgar. Basing things merely on the fact that Markos has fought higher level of competition, and surprised a lot of people with her TUF fights, I see this being a test of heart more than skills.
Wiseman Prediction: Randa Markos via unanimous decision.
#6 MICHAEL JOHNSON (17-9-0) VS #15 NATE DIAZ (18-10-0)
Wiseman: Diaz is talented and dangerous, but his movement is zombie-like. He walks straight forward and throws non-threatening shots. Yes, he throws a load of shots, but Johnson will be pressing and countering. His speed, angles, and unpredictable style will pose problems for Diaz.
Wiseman Prediction: Michael Johnson via unanimous decision.
#2 JUNIOR “CIGANO” DOS SANTOS (17-3-0) VS #9 ALISTAIR “THE REEM” OVEREEM (39-14-0, 1NC)
Wiseman: The damage that JDS has taken over the past couple years is insane. His face has been rearranged several times. He tends to do well against counterstrikers, but that’s now Overeem. Overeem will push forward and use his kicks and level changes to keep JDS guessing. If we look at which fighter has grown and been more active it’s Overeem. I don’t see JSD bringing anything new that will counter Overeem.
Wiseman Prediction: Alistair “The Reem” Overeem via unanimous decision
(C) RAFAEL DOS ANJOS (24-7-0) VS #2 “COWBOY” DONALD CERRONE (28-6-0, 1NC)
Wiseman: It’s hard to go against Cowboy, especially since he is on an 8-fight win streak sin his loss to dos Anjos. However, it’s the aggressive power of dos Anjos that makes him dangerous. Cerrone starts slow and while he has knockout power, the advantage goes to dos Anjos. When we look at what was done to Pettis it’s hard to go for Cerrone. While I personally like him more as a fighter, looking at skills and how dos Anjos mixes things up, I have him keeping the belt. This is one time I’m hoping I’m wrong.
Wiseman Prediction : Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision
