MMA fans step up again to help Invicta FC 15’s Ediane Gomes cover pre-fight medical expenses

It wasn’t easy for Brazilian featherweight Ediane Gomes (10-4-0) to come to her Invicta FC 15 fight with Amanda Bell (3-3-0) with her hat in hand.

The 35-year-old  felt the need to open up a GoFundMe account in December for the extra medicals that the State of California requires for fighters in their jurisdiction.

But it turns out the MMA community has Gomes’ back covered. With seven days to go, 85% of the goal of $1000 USD has been donated by fans, defraying much of the burden of the expenses and allowing her keep the focus on her fight with Bell.

Update: The goal of $1000 USD is complete, raided by 20 fans in 29 days, but unfortunately Gomes had complications making weight for the fight, and thus her fight with Amanda Bell has been cancelled.

Gomes’ medical issues, prompted an explanation from Invicta FC president Shannon Knapp, who clarified the company’s policies and procedures to MMA Junkie.

Still, it’s nice to know the MMA fans are willing to chip in when unexpected circumstances arise.

This is not the first time they have acted.

Fans are still contributing to UFC Hall-of-Famer Mark Coleman’s plight with his medical bills for hip-replacement surgery. As of this writing, $49,715 USD has been contributed towards the $100,000 USD goal.

It’s a somber reminder of what it takes at times to be a fighter – and a fight fan.

Enjoy the fights.
