5 THINGS ABOUT HAWAII MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT

Ilima-Lei MacFarlane: Most people don’t know that Hawaii is heavily centrified right now. Gentrification is a really big problem going on right now. What it does is it drives out a lot of native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders out of their homes, because it becomes so unaffordable to live in. That’s why you see a lot of displaced islanders up here in the mainland or the poorest parts of the island, largely because of gentrification.

Ilima-Lei MacFarlane: A lot of people don’t know that the public school system is one of the worst in the whole nation. It has pretty low.. especially in areas like Waianae the public school system is abysmal.

My coach is like say Hawaiians are the largest consumers of Spam. (Laughs). I’m like people already know that! (Laughs)

Ilima-Lei MacFarlane: Hawaii I believe has the second place for worst traffic in the United States. [Editor’s Note: As of 2015, it appears to be the third worst.] Number one is New York, or something, [Editor’s Note: According to this story, it’s Los Angeles] but the traffic is just ridiculous. I forget where I saw the statistics, but Hawaii is definitely up there. Especially now where they’re constructing a transit rail. The construction itself is making traffic twice as bad as it already is. The island is becoming overpopulated, and yeah it’s just ridiculous so traffic is the worst out in Hawaii.

Ilima-Lei MacFarlane: If you look at Hawaii as a state, it has the most top-level fighters come out of there than any other state. We can’t verify that.. (Laughs)

Ilima-Lei MacFarlane: We still have active volcanoes. Yeah. (Laughs)

I think it was as recent as a year ago on the big island.

So, there you have it.

“I could have came up with some better answers, but I was put on the spot and I’m super-hungry, so I’m kind of negative right now,” MacFarlane said with a laugh.

You did just fine, Ilima-Lei.

Bellator 148 takes place Friday, January 29th from the SaveMart Center in Fresno, California.
