The Wiseman Report – Ruth shuts down Ovchynnikova at Bellator 150

Bellator 150: Kongo vs Spartan went down at the Kansas Star Casino last Friday and new Muay Thai prospect Lena Ovchynnikova, who my colleague Kenai Andrews talked to before the fight last week, lost a unanimous decision to fellow rookie Rebecca Ruth.

I thought the smaller Ovchynnikova made the mistake of fighting Ruth’s brawling style after the first round. Ruth’s power and control was evident as she knocked down Ovchynnikova and controlled her when the fight went to the ground for the most part of the final two rounds.

Overall, a solid fight and I expect improvements from both fighters. I’d like Ruth to face the dynamic Hawaiian Ilima-Lei MacFarlane next.

Holly Holm is currently ranked #13 in the UFC’s P4P rankings.. Expect her to go up if she can defend against Miesha Tate at UFC 196.

February 23rd marked the third anniversary of the first female fight in UFC history: UFC 157’s Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche. And it didn’t dissapoint.

Invicta FC 16 takes place March 11th at the Trinidad Pavillion of the Tropicana in Las Vegas. Ayala Hamasaki defends the atomweight against Amber Brown in the main event and it streams on UFC Fight Pass.

Lauren Murphy defeated Kelly Fasholz via TKO and Ashlee-Evans Smith made a victorious decision return over Marion Reneau at UFC Fight Night 83: Cowboy vs Cowboy.  Good fights, as usual, by the ladies. Evans-Smith in particular looks like she’s on her way.

And finally, not really news of any kind, but I just thought it was a cool tweet:

See you next week!
