MMA fighter Joao Carvalho dies from injuries 48 hours after weekend bout

Portugese welterweight fighter Joao Carvalho (1-2-0) passed away Monday April 11th after sustaining injuries from a bout with Charlie Ward at a Total Extreme Fighting card April 9th.

Carvalho lost the bout via a third round TKO.

He was 28 years old.

Ward is a teammate of current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, who told Lydia Des Dolles of MMA Connect TV the referee could have stopped the fight earlier.

“Your man took some big shots,” he said to Des Dolles. “Thought it could have been stopped a little earlier.

“I feel these referees need to be on the ball a little bit.”

Condolences to the family of João Carvalho

The TEF Team are deeply saddened by the news of João Carvalho’s death. Last night 11th of April, mixed martial artist João Carvalho passed away after 2 days of the best medical care and treatment in Beaumont Hospital following his three round TKO stoppage defeat on Saturday 9th April at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Following the referee stoppage João, who was representing Portuguese club Team Nobrega, was assessed by doctors and medical staff at the onsite medical office as per normal procedure. It was determined that he should be sent to hospital. In hospital he received emergency treatment and transferred to ICU later that evening. Formal hospital medical reports and procedures are still being carried out. João was 28 years of age.

We’d also like to thank all sports fans for their concern and support. We will give whatever support we can to Joao’s family.”

The MMA community paid tribute to Carvalho on social media.

A crowdfunding page has been set up for Carvalho’s family to help defray funeral expenses. The goal is 5,000 English pounds, of which 1,030 pounds has been raised as of this writing.
