TUF 23 – Episode 9 thoughts

Team Joanna finally broke through in Episode 8.  But they are down to their last male and female fighters. This week, it’s up to Ashley Yoder to keep Team Joanna Jedrzejczyk alive against Team Claudia Gadelha’s Kate Jackson.

Team Claudia’s Cory Hendricks is still feeling pain, so he limited his training to the basics. If he can’t fight, he will be replaced.

We haven’t seen a lot of Yoder on the show. She reveals to her teammates her brother passed away in some kind of motorcycle accident. After some depression, she discovered MMA and the rest is history.

We haven’t seen much of Jackson either. Claudia reveals the gameplan is to take Yoder to the ground.

Hendricks sees the doctor again and is told the pain in his shoulder is a “protrusion” of his herniated disc onto the nerve. They will know more in about four days, but at least Hendricks is not out.

We see Joanna and Claudia talk about their upcoming fight at the TUF 23 Finale. Both fighters are highly motivated to prove they are the best. Joanna wants to make Claudia pay for the disrespect on the show, while Claudia feels she won the first fight and wants to leave no question at the Finale.

Yoder weighs in at 115.5 pounds, while Jackson is dead on at 115 pounds.

ROUND ONE

Yoder takes the centre and comes out kicking, but Jackson uses it to get the takedown. Yoder looks for submissions though, threatening armours, but Jackson lands some elbows in side control. Ref John McCarthy warns Jackson two work and Jackson lands a shot. Ref warns Yoder about her upkicks, as she lands two nice looking ones. But Jackson continues to work in the guard. Yoder threatens another armbar. 1:20 left. It’s a bit of a stalemate as Yoder almost has Jackson, but Kate is calm and keeps the pressure on. Ref continues to warn to work, but does nothing. And the horn goes as Yoder lands an upkick.

Tough round to score. Yoder threatened with the armbar but Jackson had the control and landed the more impactful strikes. I gave the round to Jackson.

ROUND TWO

Yodel lands a straight left. Jackson closes the distance, lands a knee and goes for a shot, which is stuffed. They trade some more, and clinch against the fence. Scramble. Jackson ends up on top, but Yoder clamps on Jackson’s left arm.  Not much action here, but Yoder threatens another armbar.  Ref finally steps in and breaks.  yoder goes for a guillotine after a knee.  Jackson goes for takedown, stuffed, but lands a knee on the break. They trade some more,  Jackson lands a nice left headkick, but another shot stuffed by Yoder. 45 seconds left. They trade some more, but Jackson lands a nice left knee during a grapple. And the horn goes. Close round again, but I gave it to Jackson on the strikes.

KATE JACKSON DEF. VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (20-18, 20-18, 20-18)

This means a Team Claudia fighter is guaranteed to win the female strawweight portion of TUF 23.
