UFC Fight Night 89 – Thompson piles up the points on MacDonald for decision win

Stephen Thompson used his arsenal of kicks to defeat Canadian Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 89 in Ottawa.

Even the cheers of the Canadian crowd weren’t enough to help MacDonald, who tried to pressure Thompson by staying in boxing range and nullify the length of Thompson. The Wonderboy simply adjusted, stuffed takedowns, and outstruck MacDonald from range.

Forced to take chances in the later rounds, MacDonald opened himself up further Wonderboy strikes and his face showed the results.

The judges scored it 50-45, 50-45, and 48-47.

WINNER: JOANNE CALDERWOOD VIA TKO R3 2:51

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JOANNE CALDERWOOD VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Letourneau once again showed her toughness, but Calderwood was just too technical. She dropped Letourneau in the first round kept the striking pressure on. JoJo did get hit a bit too much, but give her credit for getting the finish. What was up with the ref in the final round? A rather bizarre sequence of events leading up to the finish.

OLIVIER AUBIN-MERCIER VS THIBAULT GOUTI

UFC Fight Night 89

WINNER: OLIVIER AUBIN-MERCIER VIA SUBMISSION R3 2:28

ANDREWS PREDICTION: OLIVIER AUBIN-MERCIER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Gouti was game and had his moments in the fight, but OAM wore him down. In the third round, he used his ground game and bodylock to control Gouti, who whose inexperience on the ground, helped set him up for the rear-naked choke. Great win for Aubin-Mercier.

STEVE BOSSE  VS SEAN O’CONNELL

WINNER: STEVE BOSSE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28 29-28, 29-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: STEVE BOSSE VIA TKO

Andrews: This was a slugfest in every sense of the word. Both guys got their licks in, but went the distance. It was a hockey fight and surefire fight-of-the-night.

DONALD CERRONE  VS PATRICK COTE

UFC Fight Night 89

Opponents Donald Cerrone of the United States and Patrick Cote of Canada face off during the UFC Fight Night Weigh-in inside the Arena at TD Place on June 17, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

WINNER: DONALD CERRONE VIA TKO R3 2:35

ANDREWS PREDICTION: DONALD CERRONE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: It was all Cerrone, right from the start. He used his patented Muay Thai kicks to soften up Cote and then went upstairs to put the always-tough Predator away. Excellent performance from The Cowboy.

WINNER: STEPHEN THOMPSON VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (50-45, 50-45, 48-47)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: STEPHEN THOMPSON VIA TKO

Andrews: MacDonald tried to pressure Thompson, but he wasn’t able to connect enough while in boxing range. Meanwhile, Thompson used his kicks and threatened his arsenal enough to pile up the points. A very technical fight and Thompson is proving to be a tough puzzle to solve.
