UFC Fight Night 90: dos Anjos vs Alvarez predictions

It begins, fight fans.

UFC Fight Night 90 is the appetizer and now we get to see if former Bellator standout and #2-ranked Eddie Alvarez (27-4-0) can fulfill his dream of lightweight champion. After an initial debut UFC loss to Donald Cerrone, Alvarez edged Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis to earn the shot.

Meanwhile, Dos Anjos (25-7-0) is currently on the five-fight win streak but on paper, Alvarez is his fiercest challenge.

MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)

JOE DUFFY (14-2-0) VS MITCH CLARKE (11-3-0)

Andrews: It will be interesting to see if the Canadian Clarke can enforce his ground game on Duffy. If he can, a decision upset is possible. However, I think the wrestling and striking of Duffy, plus the motivation from his previous loss to Dustin Poirier gets him the win.

Andrews Predictions: Joe Duffy via unanimous decision

ALAN JOUBAN (13-4-0) VS BELAL MUHAMMAD (9-0-0)

Andrews: This is Muhammad’s UFC debut. He is undefeated and looks to be a decent striker, but I have to go with the proven chin and striking of Jouban.

Andrews Predictions: Alan Jouban via TKO

#10 ROY NELSON (22-12-0) VS #12 DERRICK LEWIS (15-4-0, 1NC)

UFC Fight Night 90

Andrews: Lewis is on a nice streak, but I wonder about his chin in those losses to Shawn Jordan and Matt Mitrione. Meanwhile, Nelson has only been knocked out by Hunt. It basically boils down to who can get off first. The advantage goes to Big Country.

Andrews Predictions: Roy Nelson via TKO

MAIN EVENT

RAFAEL DOS ANJOS (25-7-0) VS #2 EDDIE ALVAREZ (27-4-0)

UFC Fight Night 90

Andrews: Alvarez needs to use his wrestling right from the get go. He used it to good effect against Pettis and Melendez, but needs to take it one step further so that he can make dos Anjos guess. Then, in that pocket of uncertainty, he can unload strikes. It will be a grinder, but I think Alvarez will pull off the upset when the dust settles.

Andrews Predictions: Eddie Alvarez via split-decision
