UFC 200: Amanda Nunes makes quick work of Miesha Tate to become new bantamweight champion

Amanda Nunes used vicious striking and a rear-naked choke to end Miesha Tate’s reign with a first round submission victory at UFC 200.

Tate started off decent enough, getting a brief takedown, but then Nunes hurt her up against the cage, minutes into the first round. Miesha tried to recover but with her face busted open, Nunes swarmed in for the kill and secured the rear-naked choke. Tate was forced to tap at 3:16.

Brock Lesnar took questions alone afterwards and stated he’s not sure what’s he going to do after a date with Randy Orton at WWE’s Summerslam. He said he felt Mark Hunt’s shots and although he wasn’t able to get the finish, he’s happy he won. “I just stuck to my gameplan.”

Lesnar trained for six weeks to get in shape for the fight and would consider rematching some of his losses like Cain Velasquez if he did decided to fight again.

Nunes, Joe Lauzon, Cain Velasquez and Gerard Mousasi earned performances-of-the-night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

Kenai Andrews checks in:

JIM MILLER (25-8-0) VS TAKANORI GOMI (35-11-0)

UFC 200

WINNER: JIM MILLER VIA TKO R1 2:18

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JIM MILLER VIA SUBMISSION

Andrews: Miller executed to a tee. Got the fight to the ground, got the body lock, worked for the choke, then flattened Gomi out and forced the ref to stop it. Excellent performance for Miller.

GEGARD MOUSASI VS THIAGO SANTOS

UFC 200

WINNER: GEGARD MOUSASI VIA TKO R1 4:32

ANDREWS PREDICTION: THIAGO SANTOS VIA TKO

Andrews: Mousasi was not conservative but opportunistic, using his striking to knock Santos down, then used his grappling to control Santos. Excellent timing to catch Santos with strikes as he was trying to get back up. Mousasi got his impressive performance.

DIEGO SANCHEZ VS JOE LAUZON

UFC 200

WINNER: JOE LAUZON VIA TKO R1 1:26

ANDREWS PREDICTION: DIEGO SANCHEZ VIA TKO

Andrews: Sanchez was finished for the first time by an impressive performance by Lauzon. Instead of trying to block, he tried to return fire and went out on his shield. Great win for Joe.

SAGE NORTHCUTT VS ENRIQUE MARIN

UFC 200

WINNER: SAGE NORTHCUTT VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: SAGE NORTHCUTT VIA TKO

Andrews: Sage was tested by Marin, who took some good shots and took Northcutt down in the second and almost submitted him with the armbar. Sage dug deep and rebounded in the third using takedown defence and ground defence (with some timely elbows) to survive. Good performances for both fighters.

TJ DILLASHAW VS RAPHAEL ASSUNCAO

UFC 200

WINNER: TJ DILLASHAW VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: TJ DILLASHAW VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: This was like the first Dillaqshaw-Barao fight. TJ used his footwork and movement to limit Assuncao to trying to counter the whole fight. The result was TJ controlled the fight and landed more and got timely takedowns while Assuncao landed some good shots and was in the fight to the end, but couldn’t push for more. TJ gets his revenge with a great performance.

JOHNY HENDRICKS VS KELVIN GASTSLUM

UFC 200

WINNER: KELVIN GASTELUM VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JOHNY HENDRICKS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Hendricks missing weight had a big impact as he looked a step slow and was beaten to the punch repeatedly. Gastelum kept the pressure on and did not fade. What has happened to Johny Hendricks? Great performance by Gastelum.

CAT ZINGANO VS JULIANNA PENA

UFC 200

WINNER: JULIANNA PENA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: CAT ZINGANO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Pena outgrappled Cat beginning from the second round. She controlled Cat on the ground for most of rounds 2 and 3. Give  Pena credit – she outworked Zingano. Great win.

CAIN VELASQUEZ  VS TRAVIS BROWNE

UFC 200

WINNER: CAIN VELASQUEZ VIA TKO R1 4:57

ANDREWS PREDICTION: CAIN VELASQUEZ VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: This was the Cain of old. Throwing vicious shots, he got Browne down and then forced the ref to stop it with ground and pound.

JOSE ALDO VS FRANKIE EDGAR

UFC 200

WINNER: JOSE ALDO VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (49-46,49-46,48-47)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: FRANKIE EDGAR VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Aldo looked vintage and did not gas either. He avoided most of Edgar’s shots and frustrated him. Then he landed knees, jabs and shots as Edgar came in. Amazing performance by Aldo.

DANIEL CORMIER VS ANDERSON SILVA

UFC 200

WINNER: DANIEL CORMIER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: DANIEL CORMIER VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: It was predictable. DC took Anderson down whenever Silva was gaining an advantage. While Silva didn’t take a lot of damage, he was controlled for much of the bout. Just a bad matchup for Silva, but at least DC got to fight.

#8 MARK HUNT VS BROCK LESNAR

UFC 200

WINNER: BROCK LESNAR VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-27, 29-27, 29-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: MARK HUNT VIA TKO

Andrews: It wasn’t pretty, but Lesnar used his wrestling to control Hunt did enough damage to get the win. I thought Hunt was going to catch him but he didn’t and Brock took the shots that did land well. Cardio was his issue.  Good win for Brock.

MAIN EVENT

MIESHA TATE VS AMANDA NUNES

UFC 200

WINNER: AMANDA NUNES VIA SUBMISSION R1 3:16

ANDREWS PREDICTION: MIESHA TATE VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Nunes made it look shockingly easy. She hurt Tate with her vicious strikes and then went in for the kill, locking up the rear-naked choke. A shockingly efficient and excellent performance by Nunes.
