It was a back-and-forth affair, but Maia started pulling away in the fourth round, stuffing Modafferi’s takedowns and getting the better of exchanges.
The judges scored it 47-4,8 48-47, 49-46.
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
Kenai Andrews checks in.
ASHLEY GREENWAY VS SUNNA DAVIDSDOTTIR
WINNER: SUNNA DAVIDSDOTTIR VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
ANDREWS PREDICTION: ASHLEY GREENWAY VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Andrews: Sunna despite making her debut, controlled the fight for the most part with her footwork and takedowns, keeping Greenway on the defensive. Excellent win for Iceland.
AMBER LEIBROCK VS AMY COLEMAN
WINNER: AMBER LEIBROCK VIA TKO R1 3:15
ANDREWS PREDICTION: AMY COLEMAN VIA TKO
Andrews: Leibrock was just too big and strong, as she used her size and knees to dominate in the clinch. She also avoided the ground.Good win for Leibrock.
JULIA JONES VS STEPHANIE SKINNER
WINNER: JULIA JONES VIA SUBMISSION R1
Andrews: Jones survived an armbar attempt but got the fight to the ground and then secured the rear-naked choke for the win. Another debut win here.
TIFFANY VAN SOEST VS KAL HOLLIDAY
WINNER: KAL HOLLIDAY VIA SUBMISSION R2 2:08
Andrews: Van Soest showed some spunk, escaping several chokes and bad portions, but the takedowns and wrestling Holliday was too much. Great performances by both fighters.
MANJIT KOLEKAR VS KALINE MEDEIROS
WINNER: KALINE MEDEIROS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Andrews: Kolekar put up a good fight despite becoming a bit defensive in the third round. Medeiros tried to put on a show but had to settle for the decision.
IRENE ALDANA VS FAITH VAN DUIN
WINNER: IRENE ALDANA VIA TKO R1 4:57
ANDREWS PREDICTION: IRENE ALDANA VIA TKO
Andrews: Classic Aldana, but she took some good shots from Van Duin this time to get the win.
AYAKA HAMASAKI (13-1-0) VS JINH YU FREY (5-1-0)
WINNER AYAKA HAMASAKI VIA TKO (CUTS) R2 4:38
ANDREWS PREDICTION: AYAKA HAMASAKI VIA SUBMISSION
Andrews: This one ended prematurely in my opinion, as Hamasaki nailed Frey with a straight right and overhand right combo that opened a huge gash above Frey’s eye that forced the stoppage. Frey almost won the fight in the first round. Hard luck.
JENNIFER MAIA (13-4-1) VS ROXANNE MODAFFERI (19-12-0)
JENNIFER MAIA VIA SPLIT-DECISION (47-48, 48-47, 49-46)
ANDREWS PREDICTION: JENNIFER MAIA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION
Andrews: Maia’s disciplined strikes and kicks edged out the best Roxanne Modafferi we’ve probably seen in the cage yet. It all came down to the last round and Maia had the momentum since Round 4 and continued by stuffing Roxanne’s takedowns and landing strikes. Great performances by both fighters.
