UFC Portland: Lineker backs up Dodson to earn split-decision win

John Lineker earned a surprisingly one-sided split-decision win over John Dodson in the main event of UFC Portland.

Dodson back-pedalled often to avoid the power strikes of Lineker after tasting some strikes and leg kicks early in the first round. Lineker kept the pressure on Dodson, chasing him trying to cut him off near the cage to bang out a finish.

Dodson started to become more aggressive near the middle of the fourth round, but by then it was too little, too late.

The judges scored it 47-48, 48-47, and 48-47.

TSN 2 MAIN CARD

#9 LOUIS SMOLKA VS BRANDON MORENO

UFC Portland

WINNER: BRANDON MORENO VIA SUBMISSION R1 2:23

WISEMAN PREDICTION: LOUIS SMOLKA VIA TKO

Wiseman: Moreno stepped in on a week’s notice to replace an injured Pettis. He was stepping in to fight #9 ranked Smolka and pulled off a first round submission. Wow! What a way to make an impression.

JOSHUA BURKEMAN VS ZAK OTTOW

UFC Portland

WINNER: ZAK OTTOW VIA SPLIT-DECISION (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: JOSH BURKEMAN VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Wiseman: It had to do with the Ottow’s output. Burkman was more precise, but didn’t push the pace and didn’t throw enough. That’s what gave Ottow a slight edge for a split-decision win.

#11 WILL BROOKS VS ALEX OLIVIEIRA

UFC Portland

WINNER: ALEX OLIVEIRA VIA TKO R3 3:30

WISEMAN PREDICTION: WILL BROOKS VIA SUBMISSION

Wiseman: Brooks couldn’t get things going. Oliveira was strong in the clinch and he landed damaging strikes inside the clinch while limiting Brooks output. A solid performance, but missing weight and his attitude after the fight overshadowed his performance. Rough!

MAIN EVENT

#3 JOHN LINEKER VS #10 JOHN DODSON

UFC Portland

WINNER: JOHN LINEKER VIA SPLIT-DECISION (47-48, 48-47-48-47)

WISEMAN PREDICTION: JOHN DODSON VIA TKO

Wiseman: I don’t know what to say about this fight because there was only one person fighting. Lineker chased Dodson around and around the octagon for 25 minutes. Dodson was precise, but he didn’t throw enough. Lineker threw almost 100 strikes more and chased Dodson around like he was running a marathon. Dodson just didn’t put on the performance that he usually does tonight. Somehow it went a split decision win for Lineker, somehow. I would have given all five rounds to Lineker.
