UFC Fight Night 98: dos Anjos vs Ferguson predictions

UFC No. 2 lightweight Rafael dos Anjos (25-8-0) and the road back to the UFC lightweight belt starts tomorrow at UFC Fight Night 98 in Mexico City.

But No. 3 challenger Tony Ferguson (21-3-0) has championship aspirations of his own. Currently riding an eight-fight win streak, “El Cucuy” also has six finishes in that span.

The winner likely gets top spot in the conversation for the winner of champion Eddie Alvarez and Connor McGregor at UFC 205.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.

TSN 5 MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)

ALEXA GRASSO (8-0-0) VS HEATHER JO CLARK (7-5-0)

UFC Fight Night 98

Andrews:  TUF 20 alum Clark has the power to upset Grasso if she’s not careful, but Grasso is the more technical fighter. Her footwork and movement should generate opportunities to make a successful debut.

Andrews Prediction: Alexa Grasso via TKO

#9 BENEIL DARIUSH (13-2-0) VS #15 RASHID MAGOMEDOV (19-1-0)

UFC Fight Night 98

Andrews: Tough call here. Can Dariush avoid the takedown and the big shot from Magomedov?  I think having faced quality opponents like Michael Chiesa, Jim Miller, and Michael Johnson, Dariush has the experience to avoid the bad positions  and score enough points to win.

Andrews Prediction: Beneil Dariush via unanimous decision

MARTIN BRAVO (11-0-0) VS CLAUDIO PUELLES (8-1-0)

UFC Fight Night 98

Andrews: This is the TUF LA 3 Finale bout. I haven’t been keeping close tabs to be honest  but  I like Bravo here. He’s aggressive and goes for the finish. Both guys can go to the ground. Let’s see what happens here.

Andrews Prediction: Martin Bravo via unanimous decision

#4 RICARDO LAMAS (16-5-0) VS #8 CHARLES OLIVEIRA (21-6-0, 1NC)

UFC Fight Night 98

NOTE: OLIVEIRA MISSED WEIGHT BY 9 POUNDS (155), WILL FORFEIT 30% OF HIS PURSE TO LAMAS

Andrews: The lustre of Lamas wore off for me when he lost to Jose Aldo. He hasn’t beaten the upper division since then and Oliveira is one of those upper guys. Of course, Lamas can catch Da Bronx, but I think Oliveira gets the fight to the ground and knocks out a submission like he tried (and should have done) against Anthony Pettis.

Andrews Prediction: Charles Oliveira via submission

DIEGO SANCHEZ (26-9-0) VS MARCIN HELD (22-4-0)

UFC Fight Night 98

Andrews: Held did well in Bellator, but I noticed he lost to Will Brooks, a good grappler. Sanchez loves to brawl as we all know, but his wrestling is also underrated. We might see these two go all out as a result and Sanchez has only been finished once, by Joe Lauzon in his last fight. I think he has at least one more all-out brawl left in him.

Andrews Prediction: Diego Sanchez via unanimous decision

MAIN EVENT

#2 RAFAEL DOS ANJOS (25-8-0) VS #3 TONY FERGUSON (22-3-0)

UFC Fight Night 98

Andrews: This is a true test for Ferguson. Overcome the tenacity , the grappling, BJJ, experience and southpaw power of the former champ. Ferguson must weather the early storm. If he can, then he has to keep the fight standing, or at least off his back. But, I think he can do it.

Andrews Prediction: Tony Ferguson via split-decision
