TUF 24 – Episode 11 thoughts

This week on TUF 24, we move on to Round 3 in the tournament.

The semi-finals.

Team Benavidez members No. 3 Tim Elliott takes on No.15 Eric Shelton, while Team Cejudo’s No.1 Alexandre Pantoja takes on No.5 Hiromasa Ogikudo of Team Benavidez.

Coach Joseph Benavidez is confident about his team’s chances to advance.

Pantoja is the only member remaining from Team Cejudo.

We start right away.

#1 ALEXANDRE PANTOJA VS #5 HIROMASA OGIKUDO

ROUND 1

AP takes the centre. A leg kick from AP drops HO briefly. AP’s strikes are giving HO a hard time. HO tries for a takedown after a kick, AP moves towards the cage. But HO gets a grip  and drags AP down briefly. AP trying to break free but HO takes him down again away from the cage. 2:58 left. HO working in AP’s guard. AP gets up again but is taken down again briefly before getting up. 0:54 left. They trade strikes. AP gets a little wild, and AP uses it to get another late takedown at the end of the round.

I give that round to Hiromasa.

ROUND 2

AP knows he has to win this round and comes out a house of fire. AP lands some strikes and gets HO down briefly. HO is looking for another takedown. AP knocks down HO again, tries to take the back, but HO reverses. AP gets back up quickly. 3:10 left. HO gets a takedown, but AP back up again quickly. They trade strikes. HO gets AP down again and works in his guard.  AP more active from the bottom, is being controlled. Cejudo yells at the ref to stand them up.  The ref stands them up with 35 seconds left. AP chases HO around but HO gets a grip late as the horn goes.

I give that round to Hiromasa Okibudo.

WINNER VIA DECISION HIROMASA OGIKUDO

Hiromasa Ogikudo advances to the Finals. Alexandre Pantoja is gracious in defeat.

#3 TIM ELLIOTT VS #15 ERIC SHELTON

ROUND 1

TE comes out swinging. TE gets a quick takedown after taking some strikes from ES. ES tries to work a triangle, but TE slams him. TE working actively from the guard. TE moves ES to the cage and pounds. TE grabs a guillotine, but ES pops out. ES reverses. Big John McCarthy warns TE of a heel kick. 2:35 left. ES working in TE’s guard. ES takes TE’s back, but TE reverses. TE grabs another guillotine but lets it go. ES  accidentally headbutts TE and McCarthy stops the bout with 47 seconds left. TE is checked out and the bout resumes. Scramble and TE grabs another guillotine, ES pops out and the horn goes.

I give that round to Tim Elliott.

ROUND 2

TE chases ES again. They exchange wildly, but no one lands anything cleanly. TE tries another guillotine but ES pops out again. ES now working in TE’s guard. ES passes and takes the back, TE escapes and gets back up. TE sprawls on an ES takedown, takes the back and attempts a crucifix Khabib style. ES escapes and works in side control. 1:11 left. ES takes the back. TE tries a flip and they scramble several times. TE ends up in ES’s guard. TE works another guillotine as the horn goes.

I give that round to Tim Elliott.

TIM ELLIOTT DEF ERIC SHELTON VIA DECISION

Tim Elliott advances to the Finals. It was a good fight.

No.3 Tim Elliott will fight No.5 Hiromasa Okibudo in the Finals. It will be an all-Team Benavidez finals. The winner wins TUF 24 and fights Demetrious Johnson at the TUF 24 Finale.
