The Andrews Report – UFC upstart Viviane Perieira stuns Valerie Letourneau in Toronto

Were you shocked when Viviane Perieira scored a split-decision win over Valerie Letourneau at UFC 206 in Toronto?

The No. 9 Letourneau was coming off two losses, but to the top stars of the division – champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and No. 7 ranked Joanne Calderwood. She had significant height and reach advantages on the Brazilian, who was also taking the fight on short notice. She did miss weight, but the table was stacked in Letourneau’s favour to score an impressive finish in her home country.

“Trouble” did well in the first round, but stepped off the gas enough for Perieira to steal the always important third round. And although I and many others thought Letourneau won the fight, the judges thought otherwise.

It reminds me of that time-honoured quote by Dana White: Never leave it to the judges. This loss is a setback for Letourneau and now she needs a win badly. The preparation for her next fight needs to be better.

Not officially confirmed yet by the UFC, but it appears Invicta FC strawweight champion Angela Hill will return to the octagon at UFC 207 to replace Maryna Moroz (8-1-0) and fight Jessica Andrade (15-5-0).

If this works out, it will be interesting to see if the progress that Hill has gained since going to Invicta can translate back to the octagon. Hill always did well on the feet in the UFC, but the trouble started once the fight went to the ground. Now that she has made significant improvements in her ground game and takedown defence (watch her last fight against Kalene Mederios), she comes back a much more formidable fighter.

UPDATE: The UFC has cancelled the Andrade-Moroz  fight altogether from UFC 207 , with no replacement.

Happy 25th Birthday (Dec. 8) to Invicta FC bantamweight Pannie Kianzad, who will be facing Raquel Pa’ aluhi Canuto at Invicta FC 21.

Dec. 30 is the big one. The Rowdy One, Ronda Rousey is making her long awaited return to face champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207.

UFC 207

Mark your calendars for this one, it’s gonna be fire!

Speaking of Amanda Nunes, her girlfriend Nina Ansaroff (6-5-0) will be taking on Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger (6-3-0) at UFC Fight Night 103 in Phoenix. Both fighters are looking for their first win in the octagon.
