The 8 most memorable Invicta FC fights of 2016

2016 was kind for the most part to Invicta FC, who suffered their share of injuries and missed weights, but continued to consistently deliver solid cards.

We saw the emergence of Angela Hill, who returned from the UFC to become the company’s strawweight champion and Japanese atomweight Ayaka Hamasaki, who not only won the belt, but had two exciting title defences.

Invicta FC 21 is looming Jan.14 from the Scottish Rite Temple with featherweights Megan Anderson (7-2-0) and Charmaine Tweet (9-5-0).

Let’s take a look at some of Invicta’s most memorable fights of 2016.

TONYA EVINGER VS YANA KUNITSKAYA – INVICTA FC 20

Invicta FC 20

This was a shocker at the time as it appeared Kunitskaya pulled off the upset, but then it turned into a controversial oversight by the referee that was successfully challenged by Evinger afterwards into a no-contest. Evinger was reinstated as the champion seeing Evinger locked in the armbar remains a memory. A rematch is almost certain for 2017.

ANGELA HILL VS KALINE MEDEIROS – INVICTA FC 20

Invicta FC 20

This, combined with was Hill’s title win over Livia Renata Souza at Invicta FC 17 and Stephanie Eggink was her ground game coming out party. Hill turned a demotion from the UFC into the next best thing. A champion in the best women’s MMA organization in the world.

KAL HOLLIDAY VS TIFFANY VAN SOEST – INVICTA FC 19

Invite FC 19

One of the company’s upsets of the year. An excellent performance and gameplan by Holliday to get the tap against a great kickboxing artist.

AYAKA HAMASAKI VS JINH YU FREY – INVICTA FC 19

Invicta FC 19

2017 could be the breakout year for Frey. After nearly getting the win in the first round, the crafty Hamasaki came on strong, with her strikes opening the cut above Frey’s eye that stopped the fight.

ALEXA GRASSO VS JODIE ESQUIBEL – INVICTA FC 18

Invicta FC 18

A good old-fashioned scrap. The striker vs the wrestler. Need I say more?

CHARMAINE TWEET VS LATOYA WALKER – INVICTA FC 17

Invicta FC 17

Walker was on her way to victory when perhaps the best spinning backfist of the year stopped her in her tracks.

AYAKA HAMASAKI VS AMBER BROWN – INVICTA FC 16

Invicta FC 16.

The plucky Hamasaki overcame nearly tapping in the first round to getting the tap in the third round with outstanding resilience and technique. She made my 2016 All-Invicta Pro team.

IRENE ALDANA VS FAITH VAN DUIN – INVICTA FC 19

Invicta FC 19

A solid fistfight that tested Aldana’s chin and confirmed she was ready for the next level at the UFC. This fight gave Van Duin some props for her toughness.
