UFC 208: Holm vs de Randamie predictions
The fighting city of Brooklyn, New York is the stage for UFC 208 as former bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Dutch kickboxing champion Germaine de Randamie will vie for the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight belt.
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.
UFC FIGHT PASS EARLY PRELIMS (7:30PM ET/3:30PM PT)
RICK GLENN (18-4-1) VS PHILLIPE NOVER (12-7-1)
Andrews: Glenn has knockout power and submissions, but does he have the cardio to stop the takedown and control the bout? I think Nover takes a few, but wears him out and gets the decision win.
Andrews Prediction: Phillipe Nover via unanimous decision
RYAN LAFLARE (12-1-0) VS ROAN CARNEIRO (21-10-0)
Andrews: This should be the grind out match. Not expecting a barnburner here, but LaFlare will try to avoid being taken to the ground, while Carniero will try to avoid the grappling of LaFlare. In the end, LaFlare should get the decision.
Andrews Prediction: Ryan LaFlare via unanimous decision
TSN 5 PRELIMS (8PM ET/5 PM PT)
#6 IAN MCCALL (13-5-1) VS JARRED BROOKS (12-0-0)
Andrews: McCall has been upset before and I’m calling it here. Brooks has been chirping about the fight and I think he will capitalize on the ring rust of McCall.
Andrews Prediction: Jarred Brooks via split-decision
NIK LENTZ (29-7-2, 1NC) VS ISLAM MAKHACHEV (13-1-0)
Andrews: The 25-year-old Makhachev should have the grappling advantage and will take the fight there when he gets the opportunity to in the fight. He will take some shots in the process from the 32-year-old Lentz, but should pull through.
Andrews Prediction: Islam Makhacev via unanimous decision
#5 WILSON REIS (21-6-0) VS ULKA SASAKI (19-3-2)
Andrews: The question of Reis has always been cardio, but he seems to kept his finger on that as of late. You can bet Sasaki will try to wear him out, but the grappling of Reis should get the job done.
Andrews Prediction: Wilson Reis via unanimous decision
RANDY BROWN (9-1-0) VS BELAL MUHAMMAD (10-2-0)
Andrews: Muhammad is a tough guy for going the distance with Alan Jouban, but I think Brown’s striking will be too much.
Andrews Prediction: Randy Brown via TKO
MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)
#10 DUSTIN POIRIER (20-5-0) VS JIM MILLER (28-8-0, 1NC)
Andrews: If “The Diamond” reverts to his previous form, his length and reach should be able to score the points necessary for the decision. Otherwise, Miller gets the chance to grind it out.
Andrews Prediction: Dustin Poirier via unanimous decision
#3 GLOVER TEIXEIRA (25-5-0) VS JARED CANNONIER (9-1-0)
Andrews: Cannonier is stepping up the competition a few notches in Teixeira, a guy who is looking atone for his destruction to Anthony Johnson. There is always the punchers chance, but I have to go with Glover whose motivation should carry him through to avoid another embarrassing loss.
Andrews Prediction: Glover Teixeira via TKO
#3 RONALDO SOUZA (23-4-0, 1NC) VS #13 TIM BOETSCH (20-10-0)
Andrews: “The Barbarian” will be a tough out but Souza should be able get the fight to the ground and work a submission.
Andrews Prediction: Ronaldo Souza via submission
#7 ANDERSON SILVA (33-8-0, 1NC) VS #8 DEREK BRUNSON (16-4-0)
Andrews: The problem with Anderson Silva is not his skills or his age, though his takedown defence has deteriorated. It his belief that he is still invincible and his inability to focus on the fight rather than entertain. Brunson, if he is focused himself, should be able to use his wrestling to ground Anderson’s game and control the bout.
Andrews Prediction: Derek Brunson via unanimous decision
HOLLY HOLM (10-2-0) VS GERMAINE DE RANDAMIE (6-3-0)
Andrews: I’m going with the underdog aggressive striker rather than the favourite counterstriker. I think if de Randamie attacks like she says she will (and Holly waits to counterstrike), she will eat a few shots, but will put pressure on Holm to control the fight, like Valentina Shevchenko did. It will be close, because I think Holm will adjust, but too late.
Andrews Prediction: Germaine de Randamie via split-decision
