The Kimura Moment

The Andrews Report – ‘Cyborg’ waiting in the wings for new UFC 145-pound champ Germaine de Randamie

There’s still a lot of chatter about the Germaine de Randamie vs Holly Holm fight at UFC 208.

“The Iron Lady” edged “The Preacher’s Daughter” to become the first UFC female featherweight champion, but committed two serious fouls when she hit Holm after the bell in rounds two and three. Many feel the referee should have deducted at least a point from de Randamie, but she ended up getting only a verbal warning – after the second infraction.

MMA Crossfire Vault – The Andrews Report

Holm took the high road in the post-fight press conference, saying her inability to capitalize when she had de Randamie hurt and not sticking to the game plan was what lost her the fight. But she did admit she thought she won the last three rounds and that the referee should have looked more closely at those infractions.

The fight sort of symbolized the underwhelming UFC 208 card as a whole. Even Dana White did not appear at the post-fight press conference and his recap in the back with Megan Olivi could not hide his disappointment on the evening. De Randamie did not appear afterwards at the post-fight press conference, but with Joe Rogan explained the questionable strikes were in “the heat of the moment” and that she apologized for them.

But now, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino (17-1-0, 1NC) is waiting in the wings.

“Cyborg” was cageside watching the fight and White confirmed afterwards that assuming she clears her USADA ‘potential’ anti-doping violation hurdle, she is next in line for a shot.

That would be an interesting fight as Justino is widely considered to be the best female 145-pound fighter on the planet.

But what if Justino is sidelined indefinitely? Or de Randamie, as she said her injured hand need attention.

I think in the Justino case, Cindy Dandois (8-2-0) should get a crack at the belt.

Why?

“Battlecat” already finished the Invicta FC interim featherweight champion Megan Anderson. She’s arguably the No. 2 featherweight on the planet. Dandois was passed over for the Invicta FC interim belt despite this and a shot at the UFC’s belt would put everything right.

If de Randamie ends up being on the shelf, ‘Cyborg’ and Anderson should unify the belt, with Dandois getting a shot at the winner.

Speaking of which, there was an interesting article on why the women’s division is taking so long to catch up with the men by Wombat editor Marq Piocos.

Mix this in with the recent retirements of Aislin Daly and Jocelyn Jones-Lybarger and discuss.

The UFC also announced a UFC Fight Night 108 strawweight matchup during UFC 208.
