Bellator president Scott Coker announced late Saturday evening that the planned Bellator 172 main event featuring Fedor Emelianenko and Matt Mitrione has been cancelled due to a Mitirione illness.

Josh Thomson (22-8-0) and Patrick Friere (16-8-0) have been upgraded to the main event.
It was reported that several fighters stepped up to replace Mitrione, including Chael Sonnen and Tito Ortiz but no agreement was reached.
