Browne was once considered a can’t-miss prospect, but has gone 2-4-0 since 2014. “Hapa” is looking for an impressive win to generate some needed momentum.
Lewis is that guy with the momentum in the division, riding a five-fight win streak. A win over Browne probably moves “The Black Beast” into the top-5.
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
MAIN CARD 9PM ET/6PM PT
PAUL FELDER (12-3-0) VS ALESSANDRO RICCI (10-4-0)
Andrews: Felder should be motivated to atone for his last fight and the UFC inexperience of the Canadian Ricci makes me lean heavily towards “The Irish Dragon.”
Andrews Prediction: Paul Felder via unanimous decision
#7 SARA MCMANN (10-3-0) VS GINA MAZANY (4-0-0)
Andrews: Mazany is taking the fight on 16 days notice and missed weight. It’s a no-brainer to take the Olympic silver medalist here.
Andrews Prediction: Sara McMann via submission
ELIAS THEODOROU (12-1-0) VS CEZAR FERREIRA (12-5-0)
Andrews: This is a good test for Theodorou. I do think he has the skills and discipline to eke a decision out but can he avoid the power while wearing down Ferreira? It will be a close one if he can. I’m going with the upset.
Andrews Prediction: Elias Theodorou vis split-decision
SAM SICILIA (15-7-0) VS GAVIN TUCKER (9-0-0)
Andrews: There was a time when Sicilia was the up-and-coming star taking names, but that was years ago. Tucker is that person now, with a ridiculous finishing rate and I think he will overcome the UFC jitters and thrill the east coast with another finish.
Andrews Prediction: Gavin Tucker via TKO
JOHNY HENDRICKS (17-5-0) VS HECTOR LOMBARD (34-6-2, 1NC)
Andrews: Hendricks seems to be fighting better and I think he should be smart enough to avoid the bulk of Lombard’s power strikes. He can also use his wrestling when he gets in trouble. Lombard will connect on something, but I think Hendricks will recover and grind out a decision.
Andrews Prediction: Johny Hendricks via unanimous decision
#8 DERRICK LEWIS (17-4-0, 1NC) VS #9 TRAVIS BROWNE (18–1)
Andrews: Browne has not looked good for a long time. Lewis is the perfect fodder for “Hapa”; someone who is willing to brawl. He could use that footwork and showcase his skills. But Travis Browne? I think Lewis takes it.
Andrews Prediction: Derrick Lewis via TKO
