UFC Fight Night 106: Gastelum puts Belfort away in the first round

Middleweight Kelvin Gastelum secured a first-round TKO win over Vitor Belfort Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 106 in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Belfort tried to use the hometown crowd to his advantage, but the technical skills of Gastelum were too much. While Belfort showed heart in surviving an initial flurry  and even landing some of his own shots, a Gastelum left hand put him down for the count minutes into the opening frame. Follow-up strikes forced referee John McCarthy to call the bout at 3:52.

After the bout, Belfort announced that he will retire after the last fight remaining on his contract, with that last fight preferably in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro.

There was no Fight-of-the-Night awarded, but Gastelum, Edson Barboza, Paulo Borrachinha, and Michel Prazeres earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

MAIN CARD

ALEX OLIVEIRA VS TIM MEANS

WINNER: ALEX OLIVEIRA VIA SUBMISSION R2 2:38

ANDREWS PREDICTION: TIM MEANS VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Oliveira learned from the first encounter and used his wrestling to take control after Means scored some side control. Excellent win for “Cowboy.”

#9 BETHE CORREIA vs #13 MARION RENEAU

WINNER: MAJORITY DRAW (27-29, 28-28,28-28)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: MARION RENEAU VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Good job by both combatants trying to enforce their gameplan. Correia tried to used the clinch and late takedowns to take some starch out of Reneau, while Reneau took Correia’s shots well while using enough footwork to counter, particularly in the 10-8 third round. Both Reneau and Correia’s ground games needs a bit more polish.

#3 JUSSIER FORMAGA VS #8 RAY BORG

WINNER: RAY BORG VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION (29-28, 29-28,29-28)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: RAY BORG VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Borg used his wrestling to get that extra edge. It wasn’t the most exciting fight, but smart gameplay for Borg. Formiga did well too, especially in the third round, but symbolic of the bout, Borg returned fire.

#5 EDSON BARBOZA JR. VS #9 BENEIL DARIUSH

WINNER: EDSON BARBOZA VIA TKO R2 3:35

ANDREWS PREDICTION: BENEIL DARIUSH VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Dariush did well in the first round, but those Barboza switch kicks, it only takes a couple to damper your cardio. Barboza opened up in the second round, and it was then that despite’s Dariush’s push forward strategy, it wasn’t going to be enough without a takedown. What a flying knee counter by Barboza!

#6 MAURICIO RUA VS #12 GIAN VILLANTE

WINNER: MAURICIO RUA VIA TKO R3 0:59

ANDREWS PREDICTION: MAURICIO RUA VIA UNANIMOUS DECISION

Andrews: Shogun showed up and showed that despite some cardio issues, there is plenty left in the tank. Beautiful finishing flurry to end the fight, too. Villante will be back, he just got caught.

MAIN EVENT

#9 VITOR BELFORT VS #10 KELVIN GASTELUM

WINNER: KELVIN GASTELUM VIA TKO R1 3:21

ANDREWS PREDICTION: KELVIN GASTELUM VIA TKO

Andrews: Vitor’s striking was once considered state-of-the-art, but time catches up with everyone. Gastelum took Vitor’s best shots too, while returning a few more. Gastelum could the same to Anderson Silva too, if he gets them. Excellent win for Kelvin. It’s time for “The Phenom” to retire once his contract runs out.
