UFC 210: Cormier vs Johnson 2 predictions

It’s been an interesting UFC 210 pre-amble.

Daniel Cormier minutes from the weigh-in deadline, comes in 1.2 pounds above weight, or 206.2. Minutes later, with the “aid” of a towel, he makes weight at 205.

Meanwhile, Anthony Johnson weighs in at the deadline 1.2 pounds under weight.

203.8.

New recruit Pearl Gonzalez is pulled from her fight with Cynthia Calvillo for her breast implants.

Humans are pattern-seeking creatures. We look for patterns and try to make sense of them, even where there are none.

As you might guess, many fans have been trying to make sense of these events.

Shall we move on to the fights?

UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS 6:15PM ET/3:15PM PT

JENEL LAUSA (7-2-0) VS MAGOMED BIBULATOV (13-0-0)

Andrews: Both guys have one fight of octagon experience. I like Bibulatov’s wrestling pedigree here, and despite the octagon jitters, I think he should be able to overcome the striking of Lausa.

Andrews Prediction: Magomed Bibulatov via unanimous decision

KATLYN CHOOKAGIAN (8-1-0) VS IRENE ALDANA (7-3-0)

Andrews: Aldana will need to step up her game her as  Chookagian will take advantage if she doesn’t. I think Aldana will make the necessary adjustments to get the decision. Should be a good striking battle.

Andrews Prediction: Irene Aldana via unanimous decision

JOSH EMMETT (10-0-0) VS DESMOND GREEN (19-5-0)

Andrews: Emmett is welcoming Green to the octagon. Green will be the hometown hero, but it will not be enough to overcome the skillset of Emmett, who trains at Team Alpha Male.

Andrews Prediction: Josh Emmett via unanimous decision

GREGOR GILLESPIE (8-0-0) VS ANDREW HOLBROOK (12-1-0)

Andrews: Holbrook seems to be the steadier fighter to me, but I saw something in Gillespie at the weigh-ins that made me change my mind. I don’t know how, but I’m going with The Gift to lift himself to victory.

Andrews Prediction: Gregor Gillespie via submission

TSN 2 PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)

#12 PATRICK CUMMINS (8-4-0) VS #12 JAN BLACHOWICZ (19-6-0)

Andrews: Put this one in the grinder. Both guys need a win but Blachowicz will overcome the grappling of Cummins and tap Cummins out.

Andrews Prediction: Jan Blachowicz via submission

SHANE BURGOS (8-0-0) VS CHARLES ROSA (11-2-0)

Andrews: Burgos has an impressive finishing record, but logged his first decision in his UFC debut. He will have his hands full with Boston Strong, who usually takes his opponents to the mat for a submission. Rosa taps out Burgos before he can get the knockout.

Andrews Prediction: Charles Rosa via submission

#11 KAMARAU USMAN (9-1-0) VS SEAN STRICKLAND (18-1-0)

Andrews: Tough call, but I like the grappling of Usman a bit more than the good striking of Strickland. If Usman can keep the pressure on Strickland, he will control the bout to victory. But Strickland can do the same thing with his striking.

Andrews Prediction: Kamarau Usman via split-decision

MYLES JURY (15-2-0) VS MIKE DE LA TORRE (14-6-0, 1NC)

Andrews: If Jury can return to form, he will walk out with the win. The fight is in his hands. He is on the bubble, so he should come out with the desperation to win.

Andrews Prediction: Myles Jury via unanimous decision

MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)

WILL BROOKS (18-2-0) VS #9 CHARLES OLIVEIRA (21-7-0, 1NC)

Andrews: Can Brooks use his grappling to control Oliveira? Sure, but Oliveira will be using his striking to keep him away  before he can.

Andrews Prediction: Charles Oliveira via unanimous decision

THIAGO ALVES (26-12-0) VS PATRICK COTE (24-10-0)

Andrews: Tough call here. Cote has been the more active fighter and has done well for himself, only losing to the top fighters in the division. Alves lost his last fight and while he still has the striking power, he not as “dangerous” as he used to be. With the right gameplan, he could gas Cote, but he has cardio problems himself. Have to go with The Predator.

Andrews Prediction: Patrick Cote via unanimous decision

#4 CHRIS WEIDMAN (13-2-0) VS #5 GEGARD MOUSASI (41-6-2)

Andrews: Mousasi is on fire and I think he has the skillset to overcome the grappling and power of Weidman.

Andrews Prediction: Gegard Mousasi via submission

MAIN EVENT

DANIEL CORMIER (18-1-0) VS ANTHONY JOHNSON (22-5-0)

Andrews: Cormier had me worried at the weigh-ins but even if he will be depleted, he has the gameplan and intelligence to make Rumble work and gas him out, just like last time. Rumble has a better chance this time to knock him out, but I still have to go with DC.

Andrews Prediction: Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision
