UFC 213: Romero vs Whittaker predictions

By now, you have heard the news that bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has pulled out of UFC 213 with a hospitalizing illness.

UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk tried to save the day by offering to replace Nunes, but failed due to NSAC procedure.

The new main event is now Yoel Romero vs Robert Whittaker for the interim UFC middleweight belt.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.

UFC FIGHT PASS EARLY PRELIMS (6:30PM ET/3:30 PM PT)

TREVIN GILES (9-0-0) VS JAMES BOCHNOVIC (8-1-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: Both guys are making their first UFC appearance and both like to work for submissions. Giles is giving up a 4-inch height and reach advantages.  Will they cancel was other out and try to strike? I’ll take Bochnovic via decision.

Andrews Prediction: James Bochnovic via unanimous decision

CODY STAMNANN (13-1-0) VS TERRION WARE (17-5-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: Both guys are making their octagon debuts. It’s hard to ignore Ware’s 7-inch reach and 4-inch leg reach advantages as b both guys like to go for the finish. Stamann may have better cardio, but I have to go with “Flash” to survive the power disadvantage and grind out a decision win.

Andrews Prediction: Terrion Ware via TKO.

#15 ROB FONT (13-2-0) VS DOUGLAS SILVA DE ANDRADE (24-1-0, 1NC)

UFC 213

Andrews: A good matchup here as Font rebounded nicely from a loss to John Lineker with a win over TUF’s Matt Schnell. But Silva de Andrade looked fairly fit at the weigh-ins, and it looks like he is over the injury bug. I expect him to take it to Font and grab his No. 15 ranking.

Andrews Prediction: Douglas Silva de Andrade via TKO

TSN 1 PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)

JORDAN MEIN (29-11-0) VS BELAL MUHAMMAD (11-2-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: I’ve interviewed Mein and admire the Canadian kid’s return back to the UFC. He has a lot of miles on his body and chin though. Muhammad will get the fight to the ground after tasting some of Mein’s strikes and if he can’t return fire, will grind out a ground decision win.

Andrews Prediction Belal Muhammad via unanimous decision

THIAGO SANTOS (14-5-0) VS GERALD MEERSCHAERT (26-8-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: Santos looked every bit the calm veteran at the weigh-ins and his experience advantage is significant. He has to avoid the ground and tee off on “GM3” with his Muay Thai. Meerschaert obviously wants to get Santos to the ground, but if Santos is prepared will keep the fight standing long enough for the decision win.

Andrews Prediction Thiago Santos via unanimous decision

CHAD LAPRISE (12-2-0) VS BRIAN CAMOZZI (7-3-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: The former TUF Nations winner Lapriseis is replacing Alan Jouban and trying to keep his momentum for a win over Thibault Gouti. Laprise is giving up a 7-inch reach and a 2-inch height to Camozzi, but he can use his wrestling to get the fight to the ground. “Mantis” also seems to give up a lot of strikes and his takedown defence isn’t sterling. “The Disciple” gets a Canadian upset win after some trouble.

Andrews Prediction: Chad Laprise via split-decision

#9 TRAVIS BROWNE (18-6-1) VS #14 ALKSEI OLEINIK (51-10-1)

UFC 213

Andrews: Browne needs to avoid the ground and tee off on Oleinik with his striking. A standing guillotine would also do nicely off the cage. Which Browne will show up? “Hapa” will be there after that loss to Derrick Lewis.

Andrews Prediction: Travis Browne via TKO

MAIN CARD  (10PM ET/7PM PT)

#6 ANTHONY PETTIS (19-6-0) VS JIM MILLER (28-9-0, 1NC)

UFC 213

Andrews: A dandy matchup as Pettis is now at lightweight and should have more energy. But can Pettis pile up the striking points on Miller? I’d have to see it, because Miller will get the fight to the ground after a few and make “Showtime” work from the bottom.

Andrews Prediction: Jim Miller via unanimous decision

#1 FABRICIO WERDUM (21-6-1) VS #3 ALISTAIR OVEREEM (42-15-0, 1NC)

UFC 213

Andrews: Good matchup here. Can Werdum get “The Reem” to the ground and can he strike with him long enough? Of course. Werdum lost to Overeem in 2011, but Werdum has improved since then. Unfortunately, so has Overeem. The question is always: which Overeem will show up? The answer is the one that stopped Mark Hunt. This is means the strikes of Overeem will be too much for Werdum.

Andrews Prediction: Alistair Overeem via unanimous decision

#15 DANIEL OMIELANCZUK (19-7-1, 1NC) VS CURTIS BLAYDES (6-1-0, 1NC)

UFC 213

Andrews: I expect Blaydes to atone for his last fight and take it to Omielanczuk. Daniel needs to get the fight to the ground, but that will be an uphill battle.

Andrews Prediction: Curtis Blaydes via TKO

#1 YOEL ROMERO (12-1-0) VS #3 ROBERT WHITTAKER (19-4-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: Whittaker has got to be on his guard for every second of his matchup. Romero can end this fight at any time with a single unpredictable strike. That being said, Whittaker has been impressive as of late with overcoming these kinds of opponents and I give it to the Aussie in another stunning upset.

Andrews Prediction: Robert Whittaker via submission

MAIN EVENT

AMANDA NUNES (14-4-0) VS #1 VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO (14-2-0)

UFC 213

Andrews: Shevchenko has improved since her last fight with Nunes, but so has “The Lioness.” Nunes confidence is sky-high, yet she will be prepared for the best “Bullet.” Nunes will walk out with a finish this time.

Andrews Prediction: Amanda Nunes via TKO
