As most every UFC fan now knows, UFC 215 will not make history anymore. The UFC reported challenger Ray Borg suffered a viral illness that scratched him from the original main event with flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.
The UFC released a statement about the cancellation on its website.
Due to a viral illness to UFC flyweight contender Ray Borg, the main event bout against champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 has been cancelled. Borg was deemed unfit to compete by the UFC medical team.
UFC 215, which is now headlined by the women’s bantamweight championship between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, will proceed as scheduled with 11 bouts at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. Moving to the Pay-Per-View main card will be the flyweight bout between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis. Additionally, the Mitch Clarke and Alex White lightweight contest will now kick off the FS1 prelims.
With the removal of Johnson vs. Borg, customers may request a full refund of purchased tickets at point of sale.
Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko are now the new main event and this the bout many fans are anticipating.
Has Shevchenko made the necessary improvements since their first encounter to pull off the victory?
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.
UFC FIGHT PASS EARLY PRELIMS (7PM ET/4 PM PT)
KAJAN JOHNSON (21-12-1) VS. ADRIANO MARTINS (28-8-0)
Andrews: Johnson is decent but us fighting a seasoned vet. He needs to get the fight to the ground, but I don’t see Martins letting that happen.
Andrews Prediction: Adriano Martins via TKO
LUIS HENRIQUE (10-3-0, 1NC) VS. ARJIN SINGH BHULLAR (6-0-0)
Andrews: Bhullar is making his debut against a guy who has fought some good competition in the octagon. Have to go with the Brazilian.
Andrews Prediction: Luis Henrique via TKO
TSN 2 PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)
MITCH CLARKE (11-4-0) VS. ALEX WHITE (11-3-0)
Andrews: Clarke needs to get the fight to the ground, while White has the power edge. I think the hometown advantage will help Clarke get the upset win.
Andrews Prediction: Mitch Clarke via UD
GAVIN TUCKER (10-0-0) VS RICK GLENN (19-4-1)
Andrews: I expect the smaller Tucker to bully Glenn and stop the fight.
Andrews Prediction: Gavin Tucker via TKO
SARAH MORAS (4-3-0) VS. #15 ASHLEE EVANS-SMITH (5-2-0)
Andrews: Moras is the hometown hero and the smaller girl but I can see her winning if she is aggressive. But Evans-Smith has good strikes and takedowns, too good for “Cheesecake.”
Andrews Prediction: Ashlee Evans-Smith via UD
#6 SARA MCMANN (11-3-0) VS. #13 KETLEN VIEIRA (8-0-0)
Andrews: I like Vieira, but McMann seems to have learned from those earlier losses and has been putting everything together.
Andrews Prediction: Sara McMann via TKO
MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)
#8 JEREMY STEPHENS (25-13-0) VS #14 GILBERT MELENDEZ (22-6-0)
Andrews: A good old-school fight. Have to go with Melendez to overcome Stephens power with a good striking gameplan and takedown defence.
Andrews Prediction: Gilbert Melendez via UD
#10 ILIR LATIFI (13-5-0, 1NC) VS. #13 TYSON PEDRO (6-0-0)
Andrews: Pedro continues to upset favourites and I expect him to do the same here. Overcome the early storm and find a way to knock out Latifi.
Andrews Prediction: Tyson Pedro via TKO
#2 HENRY CEJUDO (10-2-0) VS #5 WILSON REIS (22-7-0)
Andrews: Cejudo has lost to the top fighters of the division and and we saw Reis lose to Johnson as well. I am going with Cejudo to wear down Reis and take a decision.
Andrews Prediction: Henry Cejudo via UD
#6 NEIL MAGNY (19-6-0) VS #10 RAFAEL DOS ANJOS (26-9-0)
Andrews: Magny is good but he doesn’t have the power to hurt RDA and he will get taken down and grinded out by the motivated former champion.
Andrews Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision
AMANDA NUNES (14-4-0) VS VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO (14-2-0)
Andrews: Shevchenko has made improvements to make this a tougher fight for Amanda, but as long as Nunes is healthy, she should be able to overcome this and take another decision. Should be an entertaining fight.
Andrews Prediction: Amanda Nunes via unanimous decision
