Tony Ferguson (24-3-0) overcame a game Kevin Lee (16-3-0) to walk away with a third-round triangle choke submission in the main event of UFC 216 in Las Vegas Saturday night.

Lee started off extremely fast in the first round, getting the takedown and working all the way to full mount. Ferguson was in serious trouble near the end of the round, with Lee reigning down strikes prompting concern from referee Herb Dean, who warned Lee for striking after the bell, but did not deduct a point.

In the second frame, the momentum slowly switched to Ferguson. Lee began to tire while Ferguson found his striking range striking. More importantly, Ferguson stuffed most of Lee’s takedowns, getting back up quickly with little to no damage when he did end up in guard.

The third frame saw  a visibly tired  and bleeding Lee escape a deep armbar attempt by Ferguson, only to get trapped moments later by the triangle in Ferguson’s guard, tapping at 4:02. Lee, overcome with emotion, started weeping in the middle of the octagon, but regained his bearings and congratulated Ferguson in the post-fight interview.

Lee also revealed in the post-fight press conference that he had been battling a staph infection and would consider moving up to welterweight in 2018 after some time off. Ferguson called out lightweight champion Conor McGregor in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, saying McGregor should defend the belt or vacate.

Lando Vannata and Bobby Green earned Fight-of-the-Night, while John Moraga and Johnson earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

WINNER: BRAD TAVARES VIA UD (30-27, 30-26, 30-26)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: BRAD TAVARES VIA UD

Andrews: Leites looked every bit of his 36-year-old self while Tavares simply put on a striking and jab clinic. It might be time for Leites who did show his toughness, to hang them up.

WINNER: JOHN MORAGA VIA TKO R1 1:38

ANDREWS PREDICTION: BRAD TAVARES VIA UD

WINNER: MATT SCHNELL VIA UD (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

WINNER: POLIANA BOTELHO VIA UD (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: PEARL GONZALEZ VIA UD

ANDREWS PREDICTION: LANDO VANNATA VIA UD

MAIN EVENT

#2 TONY FERGUSON VS. #7 KEVIN LEE

WINNER: TONY FERGUSON VIA SUBMISSION (TRIANGLE CHOKE) R3 4:02

ANDREWS PREDICTION: TONY FERGUSON VIA UD

Andrews: Ferguson weathered the storm of Kevin Lee in the first round, and then used his ground game to suck him into an armbar and then when Lee escaped that, the triangle choke. Lee’s weight troubles had to factor in, and then after the fight he revealed he had a staph infection. Good win for Ferguson, good fight by both competitors.
