The UFC is in New York City tonight as former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre attempts to return to the octagon after more than four years of inaction against middleweight champ Michael Bisping.
Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.
UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS (8PM ET/ 5PM PT)
AIEMANN ZAHABI (7-0-0) VS. RICARDO RAMOS (10-1-0)
Andrews: Both fighters are up-and-comers who won their debut fights in the octagon. Ramos like to get the submission so can Zahabi keep the fight on the feet? I think he can and while I don’t see him stopping Ramos, he will get the decision.
Andrews Prediction: Aiemann Zahabi via UD
#9 ALEKSEI OLEINIK (52-10-1) VS. #12 CURTIS BLAYDES (7-1-0, 1NC)
Andrews: Can Blaydes get the knockout before he gets taken to the ground? I don’t know. Blades has shown knockout prowess in the past and he can go the distance, but I think Oleinik will survive some early scares, drag Blaydes to the ground and come away with the submission.
Andrews Prediction: Aleksei Oleinik via submission
RANDY BROWN (9-2-0) VS. MICKEY GALL (4-0-0)
Andrews: Brown is a good test for Gall but Mick will keep Brown on the defensive, get him to the ground if his striking isn’t working and tap him out.
Andrews Prediction: Mickey Gall via submission
#6 OVINCE ST. PREUX (21-10-0) VS. COREY ANDERSON (9-3-0)
Andrews: OSP has the striking advantage and as long as he doesn’t underestimate Anderson’s wrestling, he should get the stoppage.
Andrews Prediction: Ovince St. Preux via TKO
WALT HARRIS (10-5-0) VS. MARK GODBEER (12-3-0)
Andrews: Throw out the Werdum fight. Walt Harris will stop this fight within two rounds.
Andrews Prediction: Walt Harris via TKO
JAMES VICK (11-1-0) VS. JOE DUFFY (16-2-0)
Andrews: A good fight. I see Duffy being the sharper striker with good takedown defence. He should take a narrow decision over the Texecutioner.
Andrews Prediction: Joe Duffy via SD
JOHNY HENDRICKS (18-7-0) VS. PAULO COSTA (10-0-0)
Andrews: Hendricks is ripe for the picking and has been picked apart in his previous bouts. Paulo Costa has never had a better chance to knock off a former champ and leapfrog into the rankings. He needs to take advantage.
Andrews Prediction: Paulo Costa via TKO
#2 STEPHEN THOMPSON (13-1-1) VS. #4 JORGE MASVIDAL (32-12-0)
Andrews: Thompson should get back on track against Masvidal who is tough, but will be rendered on the defensive by the kicks of Thompson.
Andrews Prediction: Stephen Thompson via UD
JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK (14-0-0) VS. #4 ROSE NAMAJUNAS (6-3-0)
Andrews: Rose is a tough girl with a slick ground game, but JJ is mudered on the feet with great takedown defence and some trick up her sleeve on the ground. Rose will be forced to stand and wilt under the heavy fire of Muay Thai striking like the others.
Andrews Prediction: JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK via TKO
CODY GARBRANDT (11-0-0) VS. TJ DILLASHAW (15-3-0)
Andrews: TJ looked good in the Embedded series but Cody is on fire with the way he dispatched Dominick Cruz and plus he has extra motivation to settle the score between Alpha Male and Dillahsaw. Should be a great fight and I am taking “No Love.”
Andrews Prediction: Cody Garbrandt via TKO
MICHAEL BISPING (31-7-0) VS. GEORGES ST-PIERRE (25-2-0)
Andrews: GSP returns to the game after more than four years away and moves up to middleweight. He looked good at the weigh-ins, but his game is going to be rusty. Meanwhile, Bisping has risen from an afterthought to the champion with wins over Luke Rockhold and Anderson Silva. The bigger fighter is Bisping and he will get the decision win over a rusty St-Pierre.
Andrews Prediction: Michael Bisping via UD
