ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong ‘100 per cent’ willing to sanction cross-promotional title bouts with UFC
ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong confirmed on today’s ONE: Unstoppable Dreams media conference call that he is willing to sanction cross-promotional title bouts with the UFC, starting with atomweight champion Angela Lee.
Asked specifically by The Crossfire if he would permit Lee to fight the UFC strawweight champion, Sityodtong not only confirmed he would, but also extended the invitation to all of the UFC’s titleholders.
“We would love nothing better than to have to an open invitation to UFC and their world champion to compete against ONE Championship and our world champions anyplace anywhere in the world,” Sityodtong replied. “The first person we would put out there would be Angela … I’ve been around martial arts a long time and Angela is a very very special athlete. One in a billion. I do believe she has what it takes to be a two-division and even three division female world champion but let’s not get ahead of our ourselves. Mei Yamaguchi is in front of Angela … She has so much talent and her ground game is the same, her striking is obviously world-class so I don’t think we should count out Mei so easily. It’s going to be a war and big test, both for Mei and Angela. I think both of them are world class, super talented and gifted.”
UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas defends her crown against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 223 on April 7.
ONE: Unstoppable Dreams is scheduled for May 26 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
