The UFC confirmed today that it will hold its first Fight Night event in Russia this September 15 although no matches were announced.
The Olimpiyskiy Arena in Moscow will be the venue with tickets slated to go on sale to the general public starting Friday June 1.
“Russia is a key part of UFC’s international expansion strategy,” David Shaw, senior vice president of UFC international and content said in a press release. “The demand from our fans to bring a live event to Russia has been overwhelming, and with the vast potential this market holds for us, we knew this was the perfect time to bring UFC Fight Night to Moscow.”
Favourite son and UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dominant title win at UFC 223 helped increase the sport’s profile in a country that still cherishes the days of its dominant PRIDE heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.
The company also announced the appointment of Andre Gromkovski to vice-president of UFC Russia. His primary duties will include implementing a national strategy to grow the sport further, working with executive teams in Las Vegas and the EMEA in London, England.
More details are expected to be announced.
