The UFC confirmed on Tuesday that welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (18-3-0) will defend his belt against Darren Till (17-0-1) at UFC 228 in Texas on September 8.

Initially, it was thought Woodley would unify the interim belt with Colby Covington (14-1-0), who defeated Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 225 in June. But in an interview with Submission Radio, Covington revealed that he needed time to recover from injuries and wanted the fight near the end of the year.

The UFC decided to give the shot to Till, who took some flak  for not making weight in his last fight against Stephen Thompson.

Woodley has battled injuries since defending the belt for the third time against Demian Maia at UFC 214 in May 2017.

Other scheduled bouts include:

Nicco Montano (4-2-0) vs. Valentina Shevchenko (15-3-0)

Jessica Andrade (18-6-0) vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz (12-2-0)

Yair Rodriguez (10-2-0) vs. Zabit Magomedsharipov (15-1-0)

Aljamain Sterling (15-3-0) vs. Cody Stamann (17-1-0)

Carla Esparza (13-5-0) vs. Tatiana Suarez (6-0-0)

John Dodson (20-9-0) vs. Jimmie Rivera (21-2-0)

Ryan Benoit (10-5-0) vs. Roberto Sanchez (8-1-0)

Charles Byrd (10-4-0) vs. Darren Stewart (8-3-0)

Geoff Neal (9-2-0) vs. Frank Camacho (21-6-0)

Jim Miller (28-12-0) vs. Alex White (12-4-0)
