UFC 227: T.J. Dillashaw finishes Cody Garbrandt again to retain bantamweight crown

T.J. Dillashaw (16-3-0) used a right hook counter and a vicious Muay Thai plum knee to stop Cody Garbrant (11-2-0) and defend his bantamweight crown in the main event of UFC 227 last night in Los Angeles.

Garbrandt, the former champion, started off well, cautiously moving forward with plenty of kicks to keep Dillashaw honest. Dillashaw, who was on the outside early on, was content to gauge his former Team Alpha Male teammate’s timing and adjustments. But when the two started exchanging, Dillashaw once again took Garbrandt’s best shots and countered effectively.

Referee Herb Dean called the bout at 4:10 of the first round.

Dillashaw now has wins over Garbrandt and former champs like Renan Barao in his back pocket. He did lose a close split-decision to another former champ, Dominick Cruz in January 2016.

But the biggest surprise of the night was easily Henry Cejudo taking a narrow split-decision win from Demetrious Johnson and becoming the company’s second flyweight champion. Johnson won the belt at Toronto’s UFC 152 in September 2012, and defended it 11 times over a span of almost six years.

Cejudo and Johnson earned Fight of the Night, while Dillashaw and Renato Moicano earned performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.

MAIN CARDĀ

#13 THIAGO SANTOS VS. KEVIN HOLLAND

#5 CUB SWANSON VS. #10 RENATO MOICANO

WINNER: RENATO MOICANO VIA SUBMISSION R1 4:15

ANDREWS PREDICTION: CUB SWANSON VIA UD

Andrews: Moicano simply outstruck Swanson and put him to bed with the RNC. Impressive first round win.

DEMETRIOUS JOHNSON VS. #1 HENRY CEJUDOĀ

WINNER: HENRY CEJUDO VIA SD (48-47, 47-48, 48-47)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: DEMETRIOUS JOHNSON VIA TKO

Andrews: Wow! What a fight! I thought Johnson won the fight, but major props to Cejudo for making major improvements and impressing the judges. Also props to Mighty Mouse for being impeccably classy in defeat. Let these two go again.

MAIN EVENT

TJ DILLASHAW VS. CODY GARBRANDT

WINNER: T.J. DILLASHAW VIA TKO R1 4:10

ANDREWS PREDICTION: T.J. DILLASHAW VIA TKO

Andrews: Another impressive win for Dillashaw, takingĀ advantage of CodyĀ dropping his left hand on right hooks.Ā Cody looked good early and the kicks kept Dillashaw honest, but it was the exchanges that revealed he hadn’t corrected hisĀ defence.
