UFC color commentator Jimmy Smith took to his Twitter account today to reveal that the UFC declined to pick up his contract and is now a free agent.
Smith, who joined the UFC January 2018, is best known for his work as a color commentator at Bellator MMA from 2011-2017.
Now that the New Year has arrived I’m afraid I have to announce that the UFC has declined to re-sign me and my time with the promotion has come to an end. I just want to thank everyone at the promotion who made me feel welcome and appreciate at every single show.

The news generated some supporting thoughts from fight fans and media.
From color commentary to desk work, you absolutely killed it in all aspects (which surprises no one whose followed your career), Jimmy. Though it saddens me to hear this news, I’m sure your talents and body of work will earn you much more opportunities ahead. Best wishes in 2019!

It’s no surprise that the UFC is focusing on former fighters anchoring the bulk of their broadcast teams. The company recently added former middleweight champion Michael Bisping for its UFC on ESPN broadcasts.
