UFC 235: Tyron Woodley defends against Kamaru Usman

The UFC confirmed yesterday that welterweight champion Tyron Woodley (19-3-1) will defend his belt against No. 2 Kamaru Usman (14-1-0) at UFC 235 in Las Vegas.

Woodley, 36, was supposed to face interim champion and No. 1 contender Colby Covington (14-1-0) back at UFC 228 in September 2018, but Covington pulled out with an injury and was replaced with Darren Till. Social media trash talk between the two led some to believe that a bout was being put together, but Usman’s recent run appears to have swayed president Dana White to give Covington’s shot to the “Nigerian Nightmare.”

Usman, 31, recently decisioned former champion Rafael dos Anjos at the TUF 28 Finale in November 2018, part of a nine fight octagon streak (and 13 straight overall) dating back to his debut in July 2015.

UFC 235 is scheduled for March 2 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Current matches include:

Jon Jones (23-1-0) vs. Anthony Smith (31-13-0)

Tyron Woodley (19-3-1) vs. Kamaru Usman (14-1-0)

Ovince St. Preux (23-12-0) vs. Misha Cirkunov (14-4-0)

Ben Askren (18-0-0) vs. Robbie Lawler (28-12-0)

Nick Diaz (26-9-0, 2NC) vs. Jorge Masvidal (32-13-0)

Macy Chiasson (3-0-0) vs. Gina Mazany (5-2-0)

Jeremy Stephens (28-15-0) vs. Zabit Magomedsharipov (16-1-0)

Tecia Torres (10-3-0) vs. Weili Zhang (18-1-0)
