UFC 234: Adesanya vs. Silva predictions

Whittaker pulls out with 'severe abdominal injury' on Fight Night

The injury bug struck again late as Robert Whittaker pulled out of the UFC 234 main event earlier today with a “severe abdominal injury,” taking challenger Kelvin Gastelum with him.

Now middleweight phenom Israel Adesanya has a chance to show his idol and opponent Anderson Silva why he is “The Stylebender” in the new main event. The fight remains a three-round bout.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the main card.

TSN PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)

WULIJI BUREN (10-6-0) VS. JONATHAN MARTINEZ (9-2-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: Both guys are coming a loss and have a combined three fights of octagon experience, so its hard to really gauge. I’m going with youth – Jonathan Martinez.

Andrews Prediction: Jonathan Martinez via UD

CALLAN PORTER (16-4-0) VS. JALIN TURNER (6-4-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: Both guys have impressive finish rates, but Porter is making his octagon debut. I think Turner will be ready show more of what he can do after losing his debut fight, while Porter will have octagon jitters of his own to battle despite having the home crowd.

Andrews Prediction: Jalin Turner via TKO

LANDO VANNATA (9-3-2) VS. MARCOS ROSA (6-4-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: Vannata is a talented fighter who sometimes gases late or lets a fighter come back and make a fighter closer than it needs to be. Rosa is making his debut, so this is a chance for Vannata to walk out with an impressive win.

TERUTO ISHIHARA (11-5-2) VS. KYUNG HO KANG (14-8-0, 1NC)

UFC 234

Andrews: Ishihara can be wild and exciting but has also lost four of his last five bouts. He will be desperate, but I have to go with the less exciting but probably more methodical Kang.

Andrews Prediction: Kyung Ho Kang via UD

KAI KARA-FRANCE (17-7-0, 1NC) VS. RAULIAN PAIVA (17-1-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: Paiva has fought on the Dana White Contender series and has an impressive record, but no previous octagon experience. I still remember Kara-France’s last fight and he looked good, plus he has the hometown crowd.

Andrews Prediction: Kai Kara-France via UD

SHANE YOUNG (11-4-0) VS. AUSTIN ARNETT (15-5-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: Both guys are up and coming and like to finish fights. I’m going with the New Zealander “Sugar” as he likes to take the fight to the ground a bit more which could lead to the hometown finish.

Andrews Prediction: Shane Young via TKO

DEVONTE SMITH (9-1-0) VS. DONG HYUN MA (16-8-3)

Andrews: I like Devonte as he is making the most of his DWCS opportunity. Keep the fight standing.

Andrews Prediction: Devonte Smith via TKO

JIM CRUTE (8-0-0) VS. SAM ALVEY (33-11-0, 1NC)

UFC 234

Andrews: Alvey is a tough step up in quality for Crute but I think he can take Alve, who likes to smile and bang it out.

Andrews Prediction: Jim Crute via TKO

#14 MONTANA DE LA ROSA (9-4-0) VS. NADIA KASEEM (5-0-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: De La Rosa has faced good competition and Nadia likes to strike and finish, but can she finish the bigger fighter at home? I think the experience of De La Rosa wins out over the the up and coming skills of Kaseem.

Andrews Prediction: Montana De La Rosa via submission

#15 RANI YAHYA (26-9-0, 1NC) VS. RICKY SIMON (10-1-0)

UFC 234

Andrews: It will take longer, but Yahya will eventually drag Simon to the mat and get the tap.

Andrews Prediction: Rani Yahya via submission

MAIN EVENT

#6 ISRAEL ADESANYA (15-0-0) VS. #15 ANDERSON SILVA (34-8-0, 1NC)

UFC 234

Andrews: As long as Adesanya can focus on the fight, he will end the career of Silva with a convincing finish. Nothing less will do.

Andrews Prediction: Israel Adesanya via TKO
