UFC 239: Amanda Nunes to defend against former champ Holly Holm

Can "The Lioness" cement her legacy against "The Preacher's Daughter?"

Bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (17-4-0) will defend her crown against former champion Holly Holm (12-4-0), who returns to 135 pounds at UFC 239 in July.

The UFC confirmed the bout earlier today.

Nunes, 30, shocked the world at UFC 232 last December when she finished Cris Cyborg in less than a minute to claim the featherweight belt and is the company’s only current dual champion. “The Lioness” comes into the fight on a eight bout win streak, with wins over former champions Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate. A win over another former champ in Holm would likely confirm her in the eyes of many as the greatest female fighter of all time.

Holm, 37, probably has other plans. Many still remember her thrilling upset win over Rousey at UFC 193 almost four years ago In Australia, but then she lost the belt in her first defence against Tate and her next two bouts while selectively testing the waters at 145 pounds. But “The Preacher’s Daughter” does have two wins in her last three fights, including a decision win over Megan Anderson.

UFC 239 is scheduled for July 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Current bouts include:

Jon Jones (24-1-0, 1NC) vs. Thiago Santos (21-6-0)

Amanda Nunes (17-4-0) vs. Holly Holm (12-4-0)

Francis Ngannou (13-3-0) vs. Junior Dos Santos (21-5-0)

Ben Askren (19-0-0) vs. Jorge Masvidal (33-13-0)

Luke Rockhold (16-4-0) vs. Jan Blachowicz (23-8-0)

More bouts are expected to be announced.
