UFC 237: Jessica Andrade shocks Rose Namajunas with KO slam to win title

Sometimes, losing is a game of inches

Jessica Andrade (20-6-0) used a powerful slam to knock out Rose Namajunas (8-4-0) and claim the strawweight title in the main event of UFC 237 Saturday night.

Namajunas looked impressive in the first round, stifling Andrade by utilizing range and peppering Andrade with strikes. Andrade started to land some inside shots, but it was clearly a round for “Thug.” In the second, Andrade switched things up and looked for more opportunities inside.

With the win, Andrade is now 7-1-0 at 115 pounds, after gong 5-3-0 as a bantamweight.

In the post-fight interview, Namajunas contemplated the possibility of retirement.

Namajunas and Andrade scored Fight of the Night, while Andrade and Warlley Alves landed performances of the night. Each fighter earned a $50,000 USD bonus except for Andrade, who took home $100,000 USD.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.

CLAY GUIDA VS. B.J. PENN

WINNER: CLAY GUIDA VIA UD (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)

Andrews: Well, at least Penn wasn’t finished. But he needs to retire right now.

THIAGO MOISES VS. KURT HOLOBAUGH

WINNER: THIAGO MOISES VIA UD (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: KURT HOLOBAUGH VIA TKO

ANTONIO ROGERIO NOGUIERA VS. RYAN SPANN ‘

WINNER: RYAN SPANN VIA TKO R1 (PUNCHES) 2:07

ANDREWS PREDICTION: RYAN SPANN VIA UD

Andrews: It’s time for Lil Nog to retire. That durability is now starting to crack. He’s 42. He has nothing to prove. Good win for Spann.

MAIN CARD

#11 IRENE ALDANA VS. #13 BETHE CORREIA

WINNER: IRENE ALDANA VIA SUBMISSION (ARMBAR) R3 3:24

ANDREWS PREDICTION: BETHE CORREIA VIA UD

Andrews: Aldana took Bethe’s best strikes and when it looked like she would wither, came up with the nifty armour. Great win for Aldana.

THIAGO ALVES VS. LAURENO STARPOLI

WINNER: LAURENO STARPOLI VIA UD (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

WINNER: ALEXANDER VOLKANOVKSI VIA UD (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

ANDREWS PREDICTION: JOSE ALDO VIA TKO

Andrews: To go in Brazil and shut out Aldo in clean outworking fashion is impressive. Alexander the Great is for real.

#14 ANDERSON SILVA VS. #10 JARED CANNONIER

WINNER: JARED CANNONIER VIA TKO (INJURY KNEE) R1 4:49

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ANDERSON SILVA VIA UD

Andrews: It’s time for The Spider to retire – now. His body cannot take the punishment. Don’t go out like your idol Ali did.

MAIN EVENT

ROSE NAMAJUNAS VS. #1 JESSICA ANDRADE

WINNER: Jessica Andrade VIA TKO (SLAM) R2 2:58

ANDREWS PREDICTION: ROSE NAMAJUNAS VIA UD

Andrews: Rose was winning the fight handily but she didn’t release the submission attempt which resulted n Andrade slamming her dangerously to the mat for the win. Glad that Rose is okay. Good win for Andrade, but I can see her losing to JJ or others with good standup. We’ll see. For now, all hail Jessica.
