UFC 238: Tony Ferguson returns against Cowboy Donald Cerrone

The winner gets closer to an elusive title shot

The UFC confirmed during Saturday’s UFC 237 broadcast that No. 2 lightweight Tony Ferguson (24-3-0) will return to action against No. 4 Donald Cerrone (36-11-0, 1NC) at Chicago’s UFC 238 in June.

Ferguson, 35, built up some title-shot calibre momentum with stoppage wins over Kevin Lee at UFC 216 in October 2017 and Anthony Pettis at UFC 229 in October 2018. “El Cucuy” was then supposed to fight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 in April 2018, but had to withdraw with an injury to his fibular collateral ligament.

Meanwhile, Cerrone, 36, has been on a similar run, recently decisioning Al Iaquinta at UFC on ESPN+ 9, stopping Alexander Hernandez at UFC on ESPN+ 1 and submitting Mike Perry at UFC Fight Night 139. A UFC title shot is about the only thing that has escaped the clutches of “Cowboy” in his career.

UFC 238 is scheduled for June 8 at the United Center in Chicago. Scheduled bouts include:

Henry Cejudo (14-2-0) vs. Marlon Moraes (22-5-1)

Valentina Shevchenko (16-3-0) vs. Jessica Eye (14-6-0)

Tai Tuivasa (8-1-0) vs. Blagoy Ivanov (17-2-0)

Donald Cerrone (36-11-0, 1NC) vs. Tony Ferguson (24-3-0)

Karolina Kowalkiewicz (12-4-0) vs. Alexa Grasso (10-2-0)

Jimmie Rivera (22-3-0) vs. Petr Yan (12-1-0)

Ricardo Lamas (19-7-0) vs. Calvin Kattar (19-3-0)

Angela Hill (9-6-0) vs. Yan Xiaonan (10-1-0, 1NC)
