UFC 240: Holloway vs. Edgar predictions

The UFC is in Edmonton this weekend and we finally get to see featherweight champion Max Holloway and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar square off in the main event tonight.

Both fighters have something to prove as Holloway lost to Dustin Poirier trying to add the lightweight belt to his collection, while Edgar was finished for the first time in his career by Brian Ortega previously.

Kenai Andrews checks in with his thoughts on the card.

UFC FIGHT PASS PRELIMS (6:30PM ET/3:30 PM PT)

ERIK KOCH (15-6-0) VS. KYLE STEWART (11-2-0)

Andrews: Now that Koch has put his injurious past behind him, he needs to start winning. Stewart is just the guy he needs for his confidence. He not only needs the win, but a finish to move forward and I think he gets it on the ground after some initial resistance from Stewart.

Andrews Prediction: Erik Koch via submission

GILLIAN ROBERTSON (6-3-0) VS. SARAH FROTA (9-1-0)

Andrews: Robertson has to get take some starch out of Frota first before the fight goes to the ground. I think she watched the Souza fight and will have some tricks, because Souza wasn’t able to keep Frota down. Someone is getting tapped, but the Canadian will prevail.

Andrews Prediction: Gillian Robertson via submission

ESPN 2 PRELIMS (8PM ET/5PM PT)

#3 ALEXANDRE PANTOJA (21-3-0) VS. #4 DEIVESON FIGUEIREDO (15-1-0)

Andrews: This is a good matchup. Both guys can end the fight anywhere, which probably means they will cancel each other out for the most of the fight. But I think Pantoja is a little bit better and will get the decision.

Andrews Prediction: Alexandre Pantoja via UD

GAVIN TUCKER (10-1-0) VS. SUNG WOO CHOI (7-2-0)

Andrews: The big question is has Tucker mentally recovered from the broken facial bones suffered in his last fight almost two years ago. I do think he’s ready to go and has proven he will go out on his shield if need be. Choi is a competent fighter but he is facing a fighter who needs this fight badly.

Andrews Prediction: Gavin Tucker via TKO

HAKEEM DAWODU (9-1-1) VS. YOSHINORI HORIE (8-1-0)

Andrews: Dawodu is welcoming Horie to the octagon. Both fighters are dangerous on the feet, with good striking. Horie’s ground game is suspect though. Dawodu’s experience in the octagon should give him the edge if he can avoid the big shot.

Andrews Prediction: Hakeem Dawodu via UD

#7 ALEXIS DAVIS (19-9-0) VS. #15 VIVIANE ARAUJO (7-1-0)

Andrews: Alexis Davis will be in the Canadian MMA Hall of Fame someday, but at 34, she is facing the next generation of WMMA fighters and they haven’t been kind to her. Despite a lot of big wins in her career, including a TKO win over Amanda Nunes, Araujo is a 32 year old wrecking machine. Davis’ grappling and toughness may save her from a finish, that is the only question.

Andrews Prediction: Viviane Araujo via TKO

MAIN CARD (10PM ET/7PM PT)

MARC-ANDRE BARRIAULT (11-2-0) VS. KRZYSZTOF JOTKO (20-4-0)

Andrews: Barriault has his work cut out for him. Jotko has lost three out of his last four fights, but to good fighters.  MAB lost to Andrew Sanchez in his debut fight. MAB has the hometown advantage, but I think the experience of Jotko is too much.

Andrews Prediction: Krzysztof Jotko via UD

OLIVIER AUBIN-MERCIER (11-4-0) VS. ARMAN TSARUKYAN (13-2-0)

Andrews: OAB has been in the lightweight division for about five years now. He obviously has the experience advantage, but is on a two fight losing streak. Arman is young at 22 years old, but dangerous. OAB will need to grind out another win and I’m not sure he can here, even with his experience.

Andrews Prediction: Arman Tsarukyan via UD

GEOFF NEAL (11-2-0) VS. NIKO PRICE (13-2-0, 1NC)

Andrews: Good fight. The power of Neal vs. the versatility of Price. Unless Neal can land the big shot, I think Price will be too much for him.

Andrews Prediction: Niko Price via submission

CRIS CYBORG (20-2-0, 1NC) VS. FELICIA SPENCER (7-0-0)

Andrews: I like Spencer’s attitude and preparation for the fight and it has me believing she will do much better than everyone is expecting. But Cyborg is angry and needs this fight to restore her feared image. Unless Spencer can get the fight to the ground early, Cyborg will be ruthless.

Andrews Prediction: Cris Cyborg via TKO

MAIN EVENT

MAX HOLLOWAY (20-4-0) VS. #4 FRANKIE EDGAR (23-6-1)

Andrews: Good fight. Can Holloway’s takedown defence hold up against the Edgar? I don’t think so. But Holloway will out-strike Edgar enough to get the decision.

Andrews Prediction: Max Holloway via SD
