ONE Championship announced today the launching of its ONE Esports division’s new gaming series along with several events to kick off its inaugural 2019-2020 season.
“The opportunity to bring everyone together under Asia’s home of millennial live sports is something that we have worked very hard on,” ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong said in a press release. “ONE Championship is committed to bringing its same brand of large-scale event production and live broadcast capabilities, unique world-class content production, global media distribution, storytelling expertise, and marketing experience to ONE Esports. With ONE Esports, ONE Championship is without a doubt Asia’s largest producer of millennial sports content.”
Managing ONE Esports is new CEO Carlos Alimurung, who is a University of Pennsylvania graduate who worked as a CBO for Battlefy, and SVP for Univision. “The opportunity to build a multibillion dollar esports business in Asia is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Alimurung said in a press release. “ONE’s DNA is about celebrating inspirational stories and heroes, which will be instrumental in enriching the region’s entire esports ecosystem of amateurs, pro players, game developers, leagues, organizers, country agencies, and brands. The team is very strong, and I’m excited to incorporate their ideas and energy to execute our strategy.”
The first event is the ONE Dota 2 Singapore World Pro Invitational, slated for later this year at Singapore Indoor Stadium on December 20-22. Indonesia is next with the ONE Dota 2 Jakarta World Pro Invitational at the ICE BSD on April 17-20, 2020. Both events will have a prize pool of $500,000 USD.
As part of ONE’s 100th event, which will be held later this year in Tokyo, ONE Esports will hold a commemorative Tekken Tokyo Invitational and Street Fighter Tokyo Challenge on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6, respectively. In each tournament, participants can challenge Esports professionals in nine top-ranked fighting games in a 3 v 3 team format.
More events and game titles are expected to be announced.
